Hey, I have my motor out for my rebuild anyway and I was wondering what I should do to freshen it up.

It has 100+ hours on it and haven't changed anything.. Doesn't burn any oil other than on startup but I was wondering if I should slap some new rings in there or maybe even a piston even if I can't find anything wrong with it.

Should I do anything to the valves? Other than make sure they are still shimmed properly.

Thanks.

I would go with a new piston.
Just remember, it can only run better if it is put together right.

It wouldnt hurt either to have the valve seats checked and recut with new valves put in if there worn/stretched at all.

Just adjust/check the valves.
And do a leak down test, if that passes u know you don't need to waste money on other things.

My 05 has more then 400 hours on it in the 1.5 years I've owned it with the original piston/rings.
Doesn't smoke in the slightest bit and still has tons of power, when I set my decompresser the other day it went to 108psi in 1 or 2 kicks every time.

I checked my valves 4 times in the 1.5 years I've owned the bike and it only needed adjustment once.

You have an 06 tho so things might wear faster, esp with your alum intake valves.

Martin,

your engine is due for another freshen up...

just spend about $1500,... it an easy target 52-55hp... using a good exhaust system that is...

once ur modified as you are, everything wears more, and depending on ur riding style and how much u ride aswell..

i know stock 06 450rs can go up to 2 years with almost no big maintenance changes, except maybe checking and shimming the valves.

Oh man Chad.. $1500 is WAY out of my price range after the cash I've dropped so far.. Frames and such are expensive :scary:

I was thinking about getting a mild port done though  but I'll probably just hone the cylinder and toss new rings and MAYBE a piston in.

i wasn't sure of your budget, but since you got the top end apart you may as well do what you can...
