I know the 450's are the hot thing right now, but it seems the 400's get no love in the magazines anymore, I didn't even see a new 400ex in Honda's 08 roll out?
I love my new Z400 and hope to race it, I couldn't afford a 450 at the time. Will 400's still be competitive for awhile?

well I got the Z for 5300 new, so it was a good deal for me. I wasn't talking of racing so I could earn money to feed my family, just xc here and there. I don't rember it costing me a fortune when I raced a 250R back in the day.But then again it wasn't the point of the thread. But thanks.
Also I havn't read anything about the new 400EX coming out, just wondering where you heard that?

Not true...

You can take a 400ex, Z400, DVX, KFX400....

Overbore it to a 440, put a cam, some port work and gear it right...

you can be competitive on any machine....it all comes down to rider skill....

I race in the B class locally on a stock width 400ex with the above engine mods....and i can hold my own against 450's...i dont win all the time, but every now and then i do sneak in a win...

if you dont want a pure race quad then a 400 is the way to go...

the 400ex and z400 beat the 450's in many many ways.

If your doing harescrambles I could easily ride a 400ex with suspension against a 450 with suspension.

I still race my 416ex, my last race I beat all the 450's on the holeshot and on the track.

rider skill is a hugh factor, doug gust would prob. smoke most of us on a 300ex.

the woods I ride get tight in a few sections and I cant use all the power my 450 makes, but I can usually run full out on my 400.

dunes and drag racing are about the only place I really get to open up the 450 and let it scream

im still on a 400, but i get dusted in the field sections but almost always catch up in the woods....its not just the bike, its the rider that controls the bike! i have won on it and have a top 5 finish at every race this season so far

dont forget stock for stock a 400ex will out handle a 450R because the 400ex's frame is based on 250R geometry. Just the 450r has better shocks. I own both a 400ex and a 450r and they are equally a blast to ride. Just the 400ex is a lil slower lol.

Their not dead, just more for riding more so than racing, as of now the 450's are the big thing in racing so they are what you will see.

stock for stock I dont think my 400ex handles better than my 450r

the 400 does turn sharper but overall........nah

the 250r stock for stock out handles everything
( cannondale maybe )

I don't think the 400's will ever "die".There great machine's and I believe they are the funnest bikes to ride.Very forgiving which accounts for alot!

I have an R and yfz.I still like my 400ex though. It's definitly the best all around bike I have.

I see more 400ex on trailers going riding than any other bike.

My Dad had a 400EX for years, and just got a 450R. He wishes he still had the EX with the R motor and suspension on it.
