alright, i have a 300ex that i am going to build into a race quad on a very small budget, this thread will probably move slow because of the fact that i dont have the money to buy stuff quickly. well, this will probably go on untill some time in february of next year, i am going to start racing in september. so here it goes, i got a 2001 honda 300ex in mid may and i have rode it until now, i am going to start racing it is not fast enough for me, it was bone stock, i am going to need some help as i go.

here it is the day i got it as you can see it looks kind of rough but i is mechanically sound a good starting platform

after a few months i decided i hated the rear shock needed upgraded so i picked up a rear shock off a 350x as a bonus it is adjustable, and as another bonus i got a good deal on a swingarm to go with it so i ended up with a 2 inch longer swingarm, it took some retrofiting in the form of washers, but it works well good buy for 70 bucks.i could not find a good spot to mount the rezzie so it ended up next to the airbox under the battery. next i changed the gearing to a 14t front sprocket, picket it up used from my dad freebee. next i decided the ripped seat cover and hideous plastics had to go, so i got some 1993 300x plastics, not in bad shape but looks way better 20 bucks, after that i decided to put on some pia headlights to get rid of the ugly stock headlight 15 bucks, but i think i may take them off when not in use. so far, this has cost me 100$, i am going to sell stock plastics, swingarm, and shock, and hopefully get enough money to move forward, i told you i am on a serious budget. what mod should i go for next, a 400ex front end, or a pipe and silencer? what pipe/silencer should i go for, hopefully very cheap and decent quality. also, i want my bike to have a lower stance in the front end to match the back, is there a different cheap option other than the 400ex front end that will make it lower, i have seen 400ex front ends on 300s, even with the relocator kit it sets to high for my tastes.

anyway here it is, the way it looks now

i got a really good deal on a sparks pipe, so i could not pass it up, so now i have a curtis sparks pipe, i am so excited, i rode with it at the track today, it feels so much faster, i could lug it up to jumps then get on it and preload and clear a few of the jumps, the stock front suspension is really holding me back, but the rear worked really well, i would reccoment the 350x shock for a cheap stock upgrade any day good buy, i am still looking for a arms that are wider than 400ex but not to expesive anyone have any ideas? any shocks to go with those ideas? i have a little money i saved by trading my stocker for the curtis sparks.

yes the 350x upgrade is nice.. on my old 330ex i had replaced the spring with a 250r quad spring and it improved even more.. i plan on doing it with my 350x/250x

Do you want to sell the stock exhaust and headlight?

well as far as the front end goes i would get

+2 400ex a-arms (cheaper than 300ex a-arms)
yfz 450 shocks
diamond j customs relocator bracket..

that will give you a fully adjustbale front shocks.. and that bracket is nice because you can use it as a relocator bracket.. or you can move the 2 "L" shape brackets up to the highest point on each side and it works as a lowering link...

he sells them on ebay,, but if you email him he will sell them cheaper.. i think he charged me like 60 bucks

i can get you his email

also on a budget you should get an aftermakret cdi,, or get yours modified,

but it looks good and at least its a start

yea, i thought i got a good deal for those plastics, the guy told me that they where off a 93, but i found out today they where maier plastics. that was a steal, the guy sold them so cheap because he did not realize they where aftermarket and because there is a huge burn hole in the rear right side where the pipe meets the fender apparently. no more updates to speak of recently, but some a arms and some front shocks are in the works, when i sell the front end i am hoping for a durablue axel

i put a pair of i believe ohlins shocks on the bike yesterday, i am not sure what exactly they are but the work pretty well and have rezzies, the stance of the bike is sligtly lower also. i am ordering a k&n filter for the bike tonight, after that, i might put on a 400 carb, then a arms are my next concern. i got tired of the plain look and put some stickers on the bike.

nope i got it from a guy that lives by me, idk if he is on this forum but if anyone on here recognizes(sp?) the bike as there own and lives in waynesville missouri it may be there old bike idk. i like the bike, and i am going to race it around here for a while, then i am going to either put a different engine in the bike or buy a 250r dirt bike. dont get me wrong i like the bike, but i miss having power, quads dont have that much power, my rm125 that was 8 years old made as much hp as a stock 450 and i only had minimal mods. dont get me wrong i am going to finish this project and race and ride it for what it is worth, but the lack of power drives me crazy.

thanks, and another question, i am stuck with this bike i cant get an upgrade for a while so i am hoping to mabe swap engines at the end of the year, what should i look for, i was thinking air cooled because i dont really want to mount radiator unless it is easy or a cheap kit is made. i was thinking 400ex if it mounts up relitively easy

honda300EXtreme

a 400ex engine can be done, the most common is a 350x engine, but you loose electric start

i dont know your budget, but the 300ex has alot of potential and there are alot of big bore kits offered....

update- i broke my arm last weekend on sunday and i have not been able to get on the computer. and i just found out my dad has to go to school from the 18th of october until january, and he is taking our truck. my season is shot:( . part of the reason i wrecked involved my suspension not being stiff enough to handle big jumps, in the end it was rider error but suspension played a big role. so now i am at a crossroads, the purpose of this build was to build a cheap bike capable of ameature xc racing for a season or 2 until i move up. well with one season shot i am not sure if it is worth continuing on. my question, should i keep going, or just scrap the idea sell the bike, cut my loss, and buy a 450 or 400 like i wanted all along. the reason i am having trouble deciding is the fact that, my bike is not bad, but i am far from aftermarket and completly race ready, i dont even have a bumper or nerfs.

Just keep it and work your way towards a full race ready quad... Unless you would get slot for it your still gonna need money to back u up on a 400 or 450 I would say just sit on it for now in the spring it well be a better sellers market if u don't want it

i just bought some 250r a-arms and banshee shocks on ebay cheap. im in the sameboat as you, just out to try racing this year.
they took some minor trimming, but nothing i couldnt do with a grinder and a sawzall
