Here's the deal. I have an 05 400ex that i picked up for 1800 from a friend. Im still paying him off, so im tight on cash. I had an idea for a slip on though...

the 450r pipe looks like the same style part that slips onto header.
My idea was to put a 450r stock pipe on it, and buy the hrc hi-flow tip and jet the quad.
Do you think this will make a difference/work?

Im not expecting the same as a actual high performance exhaust, but hopin for a power increase. Give me your opinion.

Thanks!

well if u mean header and all the headers are completely differnt. and as far as the 450r muffler and hrc high flow tip i say pull the baffle out of the stock ex and rejet

you can buy high flow end caps on ebay, they come with spark arrestor screens, or do what im doing, contact your grandpa(im only 15) and have him help ya make your own! i think it will sound better than just pulling the stock end cap off, and do you guys think i will need to rejet for that>

well i think you should buy the 450r exhaust and do your plan, and see if it makes a difference but do it all fast cuz if it dont. Return it. i always like new ideas i dont like it when ppl wont accept an idea

i say save the money for an aftermarket because its not gonna make enought diff that its gonna matter. just save ur money. ull like an aftermarket way more than a stock 450. an aftermarket hmf will run u like 220

try it, because no one will ever know if its any extra power if you just save up for an hmf or other brand muffler. If it does help thats a really cheap way for some guys on here to get some extra power.

If you can get a 450 exhaust from an 06'-07' I would do it. That is the best stock exhaust system to date of any quad sold. Tuners recommed leaving that exhuast on the bike unless you are going to drop $500-700 on something like a curtis sparks. Some of the 450 aftermarket exhaust actually rob power and only give the bike a different sound.

thanks people. see, i did try to take the end baffle out, but it sounds like crap compared to aftermarket and it dont make a difference. (the end of the pipe thats actually open is only like 5in long, the rest is all small hole and packing.) i figured the 450r w/ hrc kit makes it like a performance pipe, and it would work, but i might save up for curtis sparks system, not sure yet. ill let everyone know

if you have any fab skills make your own shorty. we did that on my friends yfz. used his broke hmf end cap and made a 6 inch can for it. custom mid pipe and a different mount on the subframe. sounded sick when he fired it up

the 450 slip on works great. I had it on for a while for a super low buck mod. You just have to make an upper bracket on the subframe becuase the mounting points are different.

Would you happen to have a pic of it installed on the bike and if you do could you please post it.I'd like to see what it looks like before I buy one. Thanks

Hahaha wow. I remember this thread:p

Anyway, after all that I have learned on this site, the 450r muffler is a MUCH better upgrade then taking the baffle out of the stock pipe. The 450r pipe is designed to be a performance pipe with the HRC tip. The stock 400ex pipe is chambered and with a high-flow baffle, all it does is make it sound like crap. No power increase. Kind of like a baby farting in water.

removing spark arrestor on stock ex dont do much other than make the exhuast 10X louder lol

when i researched it i saw a guy used some kind of a rubber coated O clamp to make a new mounting part further down his frame.

yeah the 450r stock exhaust isnt gonna do much for you performance wise..and if i remmber correctly the mounts are way off. id just look for a cheap slip on once you get the bike paid off.

The main reason for someone to install one on is bike is sound restriction. Around here when we ride in winter in the trails if a patrol see's you have a muffler that looks like aftermarket somewhat and hears its louder than other quads your sure to get an instant ticket...

Since the 06+ 450r muffler is probably the most performing stock muffler because it is a straight through design instead of chamberd. Its the best option for this kind of situation. With an HCR or Aftermarket tip/baffle it makes this muffler pretty versatile, oem baffle in winter and open tip in summer (summer we don't trail ride).

If I would not trail ride at all or if it would be less restrictive I would'nt even bother fitting one on my 400...

when you put the HRC tip on its gonna become louder..the stock 400ex pipe is nice and quiet and until you start doing motor work is just fine. If your using it for trail riding id just leave it stock. The trouble of mounting up the 450r stock pipe is not worth it if it were me, but if you like it and wanna do it go for it ;)

i can afford an aftermarket slip on and everything. i know to start with slip-ons dont give you a ton of power. i was just thinking hey for 30 bucks and i weld up a bracket maybe i could get a better sound.
