Hey damn its been like years since i've been on here, but i have a quick question, i have a built up 440 and it just started latly to show obvious signs of the timing chain stretching(slapping). Now i recall this problem was huge with a lot of you guys back in the 400ex days. I alreddy ordered a new chain but I'm going riding with a new chain or not this weekend and hitting a rev 2 kicker. It seems to run ok even though the cam is prolly off a few degrees by now... is it heard of to break a cam chain? can i play with the cam chain adjuster somehow to make it slap less just for the weekend?? let me know, thanks-darrenhttp://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h248/nvrich2004/101_2826.jpg

If its off enough the chain will jump teeth and lose timing and you will have piston to valve contact. No you cant tighten it up, the stock tensioner is automatic. Get a CRF 450 chain, its only about $30 shipped and is the exact same as the heavy duty ones most big engine builders sell. Very good idea to do so.

when you replace the chain you dont have to remove the head correct?

Correct. You do need to remove the valve cover, clutch cover and clutch assembly...
