View Full Version : how much low end would i gain from dropping one tooth from the front sproket

i was trying to gain low end power and somebody told me drop a tooth in my front sproket is this correct? i got a 400ex

yes lowering your front sprocket will give you more bottom end but will take away a little top speed.

I have a 14 tooth front sprocket and i love it just right for an ex id say great in the woods and top end isnt that bad,try it youll probably love the change i did i wish i would of gotten a 14 tooth sooner.

I tried it for MX and it did pick up acceleration, but I found myself shifting way more, and that alone tired me out more. If you do some simple power mods (ie a piston and cam) it pull stock gearing much better. I preferred the stock gearing with 20" tires for trails and 18" tires for MX.

for mx & trail riding i run a 13 in the front and a 38 in rear and works great ! tons of snap when coming out of the gate and i find you dont always have to shift when going around corners. its also great for trails. i find it doesn't drop your top end that much.
