Hey I am contemplating redoing my motor over this winter and already have the following mods being installed today. Sparks timing key, Sparks x-6 exhaust, uni filter and ehs air lid, along with a rejet. So I feel I am at the limit of simple mods, I am planning on a 416 kit with a cam and port work, I was thinking of running a Sparks cam and have them do the work, but I have heard some goods things about Baldwin Motorsports and F.A.S.T. Any suggestions on where I should go from here.

C&D Racing did my head and they did an awesome job. They also did some work for a buddy that we ride with on his EX, and it also runs awesome with their work! For what they are, they leave alot of guys who see them run impressed. I would definately recommend them.

The only person I have had experience with that you listed was Sparks, and I have seen much better work (this was on our 450, BTW). I do know that they are capable of building some nasty 400EX's, though. I would just be careful and do alot of research before you decide.

I'm sending my motor to CT Racing this winter. they are going to do the head work, bore, re-sleeve, valve job... i mainly wanted to go with CT because i want my head porting to match my exhaust. I hope they do a good job...I know they usually win the Baja 500 and other long endurance races.

I would go with C&D, they have a great reputation and their pricing is very aggressive compared to other shops.

stick with sparks. they are a awsome racing company. one of the best along with duncan. you will be very happy with there work. plus if u have all sparks in your motor you can call them when it needs addjustments etc.
side not: i no someone with a sparks built 450 and woooow. its is the fast bike i have ever ridden in my life. however it was a 500r =p. it is very reliable too.

how is the FST 500 kit...anyone know what kind of dyno numbers it putting down? or how it does up against a 450? thanks

I have not had mine dyno'd but when I race a piped & cam 450R, I beat them by about a little more than a quad length in 300'. top speed however they pull me in slowly.

How is it for reliability? Still crank over easily? Run smooth. What kind of powerband more bottom, or mid or top? I need to build an engine for mx next year to pass up a piped yfz he's my biggest competition... I have the suspension to do it. Just time for the power. Time for some 450s to get beat by an antique :P

It's been very reliable for me, I change the oil every 3-4 tanks of gas and clean the air filter after every ride. So far no problems. As for power the 500 kit doesn't allow the motor scream as much as say a 440, it's more of a bottom to midrange monster. I'd say (just guessing) around 49hp? It still cranks & runs very smooth, and yes out accelerate's a slightly modded 450R. the 450's still have a bit more top speed though.

Do you have any head work with your 500 kit? you think a good 440 kit would be quicker? does it rev pretty quick?

The head is ported and revs faster than a 440. I'm sure of that (TESTED!), and I don't know of any 440's that can beat a piped & cam 450R so yeah believe me it's fast!

Well thanks for the input, I was thinking of FAST only because of their experience with Banshees, and I plan on having them do my Banshee. I guess I will have to research it more on the Sparks engine building and porting. Otherwise it's going to CD.

Have you ever met Laz? He is one of the nicest guys you can meet. He would help anyone at races, if asked.

I'll give ya that he is very busy and not "chatty", but really a great guy, if you meet him
