FST stands for Four Stroke Tech. You'll find the secondary oil cooler at the bottom of the products page.

You can buy one of those tranny coolers or whatever it is the guys use now out of jegs for like 1/4 the price of the FST one. I believe members on here have also used cbr 1000 coolers with good success. Search it for like 5 minutes and you will have all the info you need.....

i have been saying that for a long time and i haven't been able to get a mod to do it.

i have done the cbr1100 oil cooler mod and it works great my 416 tops out at 200 degrees and i have seen stockers run at over 275 degrees so i think it works pretty good and when i am going at a good speed at low rpms it runs at 150!

here is some pics

and please if any mods look at this make it a sticky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Or if people weren't so lazy and actually used "search". I've seen the same question asked 3 times in a matter of hours. And we all know the favorite questions. "Whats the best pipe", "what should my jetting be" "blah blah blah". All could be answered with "search".

search isn't as good as most think you can't even put in 3 letter words like oil so you can't look up oil cooler and maybe people like you should just not post at all i don't see why you even look if you don't like to see the same post!

Hey j450rking,

so do the stock fittings bolt right up to the cbr oil cooler? and also, are u able to run scoops with that cooler? i was looking at getting a bigger cooler, but i was worried how wide you can go before it will interfere with the fit of plastics and air scoops.

j450rking
07-24-2007, 07:49 AM
it use's the stock ex lines you just have to make a 3 inch exstesion to make it work like in the pic but i am pretty shour you can use a line off another honda or somthing that is longer but has the same fittings

and yes i run scoops with my cooler and there is about 3 iches or so space in between the cooler and the scoops and the cooler go's alittle farther back then the scoops anyway so there shouldn't be a problum

i will get a pic of the cooler with the scoops and everything later if i can remember

if you need to know anything else just ask

There is so much information on this website. My first tip to new members is to spend some time reading some of it, you can learn so much that way. Most people that use search know how to find *oil*. So if want learn something about your quad, use search. Or if you want to not make this such a great site, just ask the same question over and over and over again :(

first off i'm not new to the site i'm not shour if thats what your saying or if you are just trying to tell other people.

and most of the time it isn't the exact same question people have but i have to agree with you that there is alot of posts that didn't need to be made but this thread as i said before is about pooling evrybodys info and trying to make it a sticky and this argument bs we are doing isn't going to help any

Okay few questions...

Glad to see j450rking and redridders positive attitude.
MAkes me feel like I can ask my questions without being flamed for not spending 1/2 hour searching for my exact answer.

The cbr1000 coolant is it a type of coolant you can buy from somewhere, or is it off another make/model machine?

When I do install I just drain my , which will drain my coolant?

This bad boy can bolt right on, and I just have to find a hose that fits?

Thanks for your time.

Im not that bright right now, can some explain to me how the coolant works on an ATV?

Does the water store inside the coolant, and the airflow coming in from your acceleration, keep it cool?

your not using coolant on a 400, the oil from your motor runs through the oil cooler.

I've also installed a CBR1100 oil cooler. For the installation, I had to fab a crossbrace to mount it in a satifactory manner. Overall, it was easy to install and a noticable difference in oil temps.

I used a oil line from the CBR cooler and modified it to make the new return line.

this is somewhat old...but...

could you describe the cross brace to mount it to the frame a little more to get more of an idea about what you did to mount it?

does the 400ex pump oil mechanically off of the motor, or does it use a separate electric/other pump? If it isnt driven mechanically, how well does the stock pump hold up against a larger cooler?

Just to verify - the stock fittings worked, but you needed longer lines?

thanks man! :)

j450rking
08-07-2007, 07:47 PM
the oil pump is mechanical and seems to work fine the oil cooler dosen't make it have more resistence it just makes more room for oil.

and yes all the fittings are the same and yes you need to make the line from the oil cooler to the oil tank about 3 inches longer.

i don't know alot about the mounting brace b/c i haven't done it but it looks like to me that the mount hooks to the frame were the oil tank bolts on and is just a bent peace of steel.

if i can help with anything else just ask thats what i am here for!

Wheelie
08-07-2007, 08:39 PM
The cross brace on mine is a piece of steel I formed to make the cooler sit at the proper angle. The ends wrap around the frame and are welded in place. I tried to think of different ways to mount the cooler, and this seemed to be the best way for me. It's solid, and it uses the original mount on the CBR cooler.

For the return line, I bent and flared one of the CBR's oil lines and used the 400ex nut. The high pressure side needs to be lightly modified to attach to the cooler, but it isn't that difficult.

The stock 400ex oil pump is mechanically driven and holds up fine to the extra size of the cooler.

If you want more pictures, or have questions, feel free to drop me a PM.

yea, true... i also installed a nice oversized tank too. that alone will help since now my bike takes almost 4 qts of oil!:D makes it kinda pricey every time i go to change the oil though :ermm:

I got a polaris 2 stroke fan mounted on the front of mine... seems to help quite a bit .. i got a seperate switch to run it off so when i'm dragging or not gettting very much air to the motor i'll turn it on.

Nates400ex

The other problem with a fan is that the rare occasion (last weekend) when you run through water about as deep as the head on the motor. Found out quickly that the 400 will float if I get my fat butt off it!!! I have the 41.00 scoops and they are NICE!!!!! Easy install cools my legs too as I am riding! The LRD exhhaust gets HOT!!!

EX LONERIDER
08-08-2007, 01:23 PM
yea, i thought about a fan instead of messing with the cbr cooler and messing with prssure lines.

water wouldnt be an issue for me unless i decided to find a lake in the middle of the sand dunes. :D so i figure water wont be an issue otherwise. besides..... if you are sinking in water deeper then the head... theres larger issues like hydrolocking motors that needs to be dealt with.

nickk- what size is that fan and where did you mount it?

nickk
08-09-2007, 10:38 AM
I couldnt tell you the size of it, its just a fan off a polaris 2 stroke fourwheeler. And I mounted it on that cross bar that runs from the top of the shocks across I just fabbed a couple of little tabs to mount it to

Yes, mounting it and making sure it gets air I get. Can somebody give details like as to what year CBR1000's the cooler comes off of? Also, what exact fittings, part numbers etc..., did you have to use to get it to connect up to the 400EX?

I used the oil cooler from a 1997 Suzuki Katana 600 and it worked fine. the connections will fit from almost any late model Honda or Suzuki, you just need to extend the return line a few inches. It's very affordable and effective mod. And it is so simple to do. I don't see what the bid deal is about installing one.

i just finished installing an extra 400ex oil cooler on mine, mounted it in front on my steering stem. made some brackets and welded it to my frame, ran some lines and it works. we'll see how well it works sunday. i donr forsee any problems, its down where it can get pleny of airflow.
