Put a new barnette dirt digger clutch in my 05 z400. I soaked the plates in oil for a good 1/2 hr or so.. put them on same order as stock was, put new springs in... Clutch is slipping. Did I miss somethin?

how is the clutch lever free play and when does it engage?

I dunno been a while since I rode it. Free play feels about normal to me. I seem to recall it engaging with the clutch let pretty far out.

do you run synthetic oil? did you soak them in synthetic oil?

yes it was synthetic.

I just rode yesterday. It's not slipping as bad as it was but it is still noticeably slipping, but I could dump it in third and do a wheelie.

Clutch engagement seems to be when the lever is like 3/4 of the way out. free play is like maybe like 2-3mm of back and forth movement, if even that much.

What kind of synthetic? Automotive synthetic or wet clutch safe synthetic? Could be part of your problem. 30 min of soak time doesn't seem long enough to me... I usually let plates sit over night.

i have a barnett clutch for my 300ex and it says to only let them soar for 15 mins if i remember correctly then it says any extra soakin time will not improve anything

When you replaced the clutch did you inspect your basket, pressure plate, inner hub for wear??? Did you replace your steel plates as well as the frictions. If any or all of those parts are worn, new clutch plates won't last long...

Ok cool, thanks for the info. I know my buddy had an EBC before he let soak for no more than 5 minutes, and it slipped real bad when he put it back together.

it could also be your springs are worn out and not pushing hard enough on the plates. You could try upgrading to stiffer springs as a "fix"

if you soaked them in synthetic then they will slip. you have to soak in a non synthetic oil and use a non synthetic for a short peroid to break the clutch in...others may chime on this and say im wrong but i have learned the hard way
