Hey guys i'm thinking of putting a yzf426 or crf450r motor in my bike. I know the 426 motor is easier to put in but how is the performance on it if I have it jetted right and geared right? I'm looking to do this instead of buying a 450. Also how reliable are these engines with the proper maintenance and how much skill does it take to do this conversion? thanks

the money you would have in the conversion to do it right you would be better off buying a 450. just my .02

well if this helps you out
frame moddifications.
motor mount kit 250 -350 pending on wether you do the work or not.
motor carb adn wireing yzf motor 900-1500 crf motor 1500- 2700
radiator and mounts 150- 400
oil tank and mounts 100 -200 bux depends on if you do the work or use stock also.
then you have to moddify small things here and there. so think about it. do some calculations. and remember if you dont gusset the frame it will last a day on the track. so theres more money.

plus your chassis must be able to handle it dont forget that.

TRUST me just by a 450. I did the same thing as your talking about and i have had loads of stuff ive had to redo over my 400 setup. Its pretty much a entirely different quad from my 400 because everything i put on it i broke. The problems were to many to count, dont get me wrong after 6 months of sorting and working out problems i wouldnt trade it for nothing but to get it where i have mine now i wouldnt do it agian. I would just by a used 450 and invest my money there.

i am proud of it now that i have the thing sorted out, but if your serious about wanting a hybrid buy Figair's JB frame and mounts and all that. Make sure you have a DAMN Good suspension under it and keep up with all the maintenece very closely you can build those 426s to take built 450s all day. Which ever you decide be prepared to drop alot more money than you think you would have to on a hybrid they arent cheap and they arent easy. Agian i would start with a used 450 find one cheap, tear through it and replace and fix it up how you want it and rebuild the motor back new or modded and that way youll know exactly what you have in it and youll be out alot less money.;) ;) ;) agian this came from someone who has been there and still is there.

btw on the other hand if you wanna sell the 400 and buy a 250r aftermarket hybrid such as my prp, they go for 6000-8000 fully rebuilt. Usally with a fresh motor and they are solid. Cant go wrong in that direction. i have had no problems outta the PRP.

im in the middle of a Build right now...went from a Ct racing 350R and now im making a built YZ426 Hybrid...doing all the work myself....its alot easier then people make it out to be as long as you know how to use a grinder, measure and a Saw zaw...but you do run into little problems here and there but beside that, its no where near as bad as people make it out to be...I have 250R EVERYTHING on a 400ex chassis...people told me that a 250R front end wouldnt fit, they were wrong...they told me the 250R rear end wouldnt fit, wrong again...only thing I had to modify for the rear swingarm and the lower shock link which was no big deal at all....250R steering stem was a direct bolt on as well...everything is lonestar with TCS shocks...should be pretty sick when Im done in about a week (waiting for a gas tank and some brake parts to come in)

I can get some pics up if you wanna see them.
