I broke my arm (humerous) from the elbow to about half way up my arm...I did it on July 4th and had surgery on the 6th, I got 6 screws put in my arm...well my forearm is really swollen and hurts like hell...I can make a fist, but cant squeeze hard, and I cant straighten my fingers all the way or lift my thumb...the doctor is a complete ******* and says to just keep working with it and it should be fine. Im really worried about it and think I could possibly have nerve damage...I just thought I would see what you all have to say..thanks

You should go see a doctor that knows what he/she is doing.

If you don't think your doctor is competent then seek a second opinion.

Everyone around here says he's really bad...but he's the only bone specialist in my area. I guess im gunna have to think about driving a little ways and seeing what someone else has to say. Do you think I should go now/soon or wait a while (week, 2 weeks, etc..) before I consult another doctor? Thank you

If you're really uncomfortable with your current doctor then look elsewhere asap.

Well he did everything fine the first time I broke my arm...broke the ulna and dislocated my radius (same arm) and I remember I had a hard time with my fingers, but after about a month they got better...I'm just worried about it a lot more this time for some reason..

Well the first time he was iffy to me as well. It's like he has to much work to do so he's just rushing all the time. At my checkup yesterday, his assistant changed the dressing and took the x-rays. Then he came in and told me to move my fingers and I showed him that I couldn't and he just said that I probably "stretched" the nerve. Then he put a new dressing on and said to come back in 2 weeks to get the staples out.

ur doctor is right. and so are u. you probably do have minor nerve damage. when you break a bone as bad as you did and they have to insert screws or plates there will always be internal scar tissue which causes you to have minor nerve damage. when your doctor says keep working it hes right.. you build up feeling and flexibility by continually moving it. it is also true that there will be some perm. nerve damage. not alot but sum and thats the negative part. but we all no if u wanna play you gotta pay some time. i took half my hand off with a paper shredder a year ago and i can move and squeeze my hand now but i dont have enough strengh to open a bottle or a coke can. it severed to many tendens from my fingers to my wrist. keep working at it and itll get stronger.

Getting the staples out isnt as bad as you would think actually. It's basically like a pinch and your skin pulls a little bit. The first time I was so scared, lol, I thought that it would hurt like hell. Thanks for the other comments too, I think I'm just going to keep moving my fingers around with my other hand and hopefully start to be able to do it on my own...

Always go get a second opinion if you are unsure about a dr. too many of them are making too many unnecessary mistakes these days. You're arm is too important to take such a risk of not being able to use it in the future, especially at your age! You don't want to lose use of it for the rest of your life! best wishes to a speedy recovery!

Whenever you break something bad enough , there's always a rehabilitation time. Most likely you have a bit of muscle or nerve damage , or that your muscles are just swollen or "lazy".

It took me 4 months after comming out of a cast to regain any little bit of strength or movement back in my leg .... and that was going to physio 5 days a week for 1 1/2 hours a day. To this day , I still don't have complete range of motion or strength because of nerve and muscle damage.

Oh ya ... and getting staples removed at the doctors office is so overrated . I took mine out myself one night cause they were killing me. A little bit of rubbing alcohol , peroxide , a straightened paper clip and a pair of tweezers ... I had them out in no time at all. :p BTW .. I don't encourage taking them out yourself .

Do you think I should go see another bone specialist or just another regular doctor? Or maybe a therapist? Thanks alot.

Breaking your humerous isnt very funny is it?

I broke my leg and saw a doctor about 30 times n he also did surgery. But he still to this day does not remember me or my name. They see so many people that they dont have time to focus on one person. But i was told he is very good n everyone that knows a thing or two told me he did very well on my surgery and good advice on letting it heal properly. I could be wrong if u hear he is bad. But for something as important as ur arm it is worth the drive to go to someone better.

I went to get staples out and it was a waste of time. The tools they use i have at home n it takes about two minutes. Same goes for stitches.
