Hello everyone. I have been reading all the threads and havent seen my problem yet so I decided to post.
Recently my 250x started smoking bad and ticking really loud. I replaced the piston with 12:1 and jug (came together) Everything seemed to go back together fine. Had to adjust valves , they seemed loose.
Now everything is back together. it kicks over easy , but takes alot of kicks wich is unlike it. Uaslly will start by 3rd kick , and the ticking noise is still there. Timing maybe a factor.
Whered did I go wrong?

Recheck timing and valve clearance. How did the rocker wear look? Were they cupped?

OK, if its smoking again that is usually caused by one of two things, 1st bad rings, 2nd valve seals. Now you say you bought a piston and jug together? Were they used? Did you install new rings? Did the cylinder have a fresh hone? You also say it kicks over easy. That leads me to think that the rings arnt sealing, low compression. Low compression will make a motor hard to start. I have a 12:1 weisco in mine with decompression unhooked. You can definitely feel it in your leg when you kick. Here is the correct way to set timing-

Jug was used but honed for the new piston. it was only smoking before I replaced them. dont smoke now. just easy kickingand the ticking. once it cools off I am going to go out and check the timing again.
When I replaced them the guy that was helping me said the rockers didnt look too bad. I have read people talking about stage 1 cams, is this something I should consider?

A cam is always a good choice to make more power, some require hardened rockers and upgraded valve springs. So do your homework on them.

Check timing again to make sure its dead on. How is the power? Does it feel the same, better, or worse than before?

well it was only ridin once afterwards. it felt slugish. not acting right.
I have looked on Rockymountainatv and bikebandit. neither of them showed cams for the 250. where would be a better place to look. I tried to goto Hotcams but it was a web cam website

First I would get your motor running 100% before trying to make more power.

These are two good places to get cams from.

Definatly sounds like cam timing. When I origionaly installed my 330ex a few years back, I somehow got my timing off 2 teeth. (I beleive I installed it with the slack on the wrong side. Slack should be on tensioner side. No slack on the exhaust side.).

It would ping/tick under load. And it felt like I was towing another ATV behind me.

Generally, on the 300ex/250x the valve clearances should be 0.004" +/- 0.001" intake and exhaust.

If its ticking after everything checks out,you could have too much slop in your chain, that'll retard your timing as well.
