Honda 650ex

I've got a 1999 400ex frame w/a 2002 xr650r engine stuffed into it. I recently rebuilt it while I was home on leave. I've been thinking about entering it in the QOTM. Let me know what you guys think of it. Here's a link to some pics:

Thanx for the compliments on the quad. Unfortunately, I wont be back from Iraq for a few more months, so getting some more pics will be a little tough. But with any luck, I'm gonna throw some paddles on it and try to get down to Little Sahara State Park in October. I added a pic of my kennels here in Balad, just for the hell of it.

absolutely awesome quad!! i would deffinately vote for it. how much modification was needed to mount the motor? it looks super clean and i cant really tell how it was done.

The swingarm pivot-bolt mount is the only existing factory mount. Two tabs were welded to the upper section of the frame to accomodate the upper engine mount. Square tubing was added below the upper, rear shock mount. That, combined w/a removable bracket, accomodates the rear engine mount. The front tubes that support the 400ex's front engine mounts were shortened, shaved and relocated. The lower engine mounts were cut, smoothed, and replaced with a section of tubing to accomodate the 650R's lower engine mount. The factory oil tank mounts were replaced w/another section of tubing, w/ two 9/16 nuts welded to it, along with two rear tabs to accomodate the new oil tank. Two lower tabs were welded in place to accomodate the trx250r radiator. Also, the front, upper fuel tank mount has two 1" spacers welded on top in order to slightly raise the fuel tank and keep it from pinching the upper oil line that feeds the cylinder head.

Unfortunately, in order to kick start the bike, I have to remove the seat and the rear brake lever to get a full kick. It can be a bit of a nuissance. But in the end it's worth the wheelies on demand, the ablility to embarass your buddies on their 450's and raptor 700's, and all the double takes and rubber necks from complete strangers. I just can't wait to get it in the sand.

what sprocket sizes are you running on that? my swap should be done shortly.

I'm running 15-36 on 18" holeshots. It does great on tight trails and still screams down the logging roads. Sometime's I wonder if 5th will ever wind-out.

What did you do for an exhaust? What kind of oil tank did you use? Any fitment issues for the Carb and intake/airbox? No bodywork fitment issues after the spacer for the fuel tank? Thanks and the quad looks killer!

The exhaust is a Big Gun header and mid pipe w/a Barnumspro can. Not real sure on the brand of the oil tank, I found it on ebay. I run Maier front plastic, which comes with adjustable mounting brackets, so fitting the front plastic is tight, but comes together fine. The steering stem does make some minor contact with the fuel tank cover when I turn the bars to the far left or right, but it's not a problem. I use an aftermarket aluminum airbox that has the same geometry as the OEM airbox. To get the carb to meet with intake tube, I used a section of rubber hose (similar to what you would use on the plumbing for a turbo) with a small piece of exhaust tubing (to clamp the two tubes down to). Honda is actually working on mass producing a 650 sport quad. They are talking the XR650 motor and putting it in a sport quad so it looks like your ahead of the game here. Its gotta be crazy fast! Looks awesome too

I have no idea on the HP. As much as I'd like to put it on a chasis dyno, I don't know of one around here. But to give you an idea; a friend of mine has a YFZ450 and another has a Raptor 700. The 450 has a K&N and a Two Brothers header and can. The Raptor has a K&N and an MSR programmer with the pipe uncorked. Neither one of them (admittedly) holds a candle to the 650. The 450 doesn't even come close and Raptor just doesnt quite hang on either. If you have any more questions just give me a hollar.

As for the front sprocket alignment, there was no issue with getting it aligned (amazingly). The easiest way to line it up is to mount the engine to the frame and swingarm, through the swingarm pivot bolt location. It should line up just fine.

Yeah, I only ordered rears, so I could definately use some fronts for when I ride at St. Joe State Park. I'd hate to see you absorb the cost of shipping though.

If you look at the first page of this thread, there's an entry i placed for another guy interested in a similar build. It has pretty much all of the 400ex frame modifications listed in it.

Thats a really nice quad. I wish the new honda 700 looked similar to that insted of that thing they made. If you dont mind me asking what kind of suspension is being used and why is the ride height look like it cant get any taller?

The ride height is actually pretty tall when you see it in person. I'ts similar to stock height. The suspension is a set of Marvin Shaw coilovers. They look nice but they don't perform that well. I'll be scraping them for a set of Elka or Fox floaters in the future.

Oh alright I never heard of those shocks before even though you mentioned it is about as tall as stock it looks alot taller then stock. Maybe your shocks need adjusted or something but yea new ones would make it really nice.
