the clutch arm goes into the case and there is a small arm about 3 inches or so with a button on the end that the clutch arm pulls on to disengage the clutch plates (the button broke off mine)
does anyone know what the part is called or even better a part number ?

I tried servicehonda but the new look up system must be too advanced for my pc knowledge.

I hope my description is enough, its kind of an odd looking piece

it goes on after the clutch basket and before the bearing and clutch plates (its the reason you have to turn the clutch arm to take the side case off)

I broke one of those too. Just pulled in the clutch once and pop! Had to ride through some nasty desert terrain with no clutch for quite a ways. My shift forks probably weren't enjoying those 3 to 2 and 2 to 1 downshifts! This was actually on an XR400R not a TRX400R--but this part (and the whole engine for that matter) are largely the same thing.

Its very common for this part to break.

that is exactly the same thing mine did, I pulled it apart and found the button still behind the clutch arm (glad it didnt fall into the gears)
daughter had to ride it out without the clutch also, it wasnt too bad until some arse at st.joe state park on a yfz came flying down the 10mph trail to the trailings field, she had to pull off the trail and hit a tree because she couldnt find neutral fast enough.
(she was putting in 1st so no damage to the atv)
but it was a pain to pull it back onto the trail, fire it up and neutral drop it into first (up hill) without her killing it or herself.

I ended up putting it back together (without the button) and she took it for another ride that evening (stayed in the loose stuff so she could just spin tires to take off)
I ordered one from service honda already (only like 7 bucks)
