So that way if you don't know that ur in first gear but you are and you shift down it doesn't hit neutral.

What he said ^^. With neutral between two gears you can't easily shift into neutral accidentally. Imagine riding up a hill thinking you're in second but you're really in first. You go to shift into first (even though you're already in first) and--WHOOPS!--now you're in neutral.

yeah, just imagine if you were doing a hillclimb, and went to shift down. That wouldn't be too great.
