What purpose do they serve?

I see lots of sand draggers with them, are they good for anything other than dragging?

How do they affect the rideability?

it puts more pressure on the clutch plates to reduce slippage at high rpm's. i have a direct drive on my 250r and it works great for trails.

Here's what the Direct Drive unit looks like.

It bolts onto the top of the pressure plate. As the clutch spins the 5 arms get flung outward--they pivot and press onto the pressure plate. The higher the rpm the more pressure applied. You can tune the initial clutch slippage with different clutch springs and then tune the higher rpm clutch pressure by adding or removing weight from the arms.

I too mostly see them on draggers but I think you can tune them for most types of riding. Not sure you'd need one though unless you had lots of HP and/or were burning up a lot of clutches from excessive slippage at higher speed. I've never used one so I couldn't say for sure.
