I know a woman who wants to start riding for fun, maybe on trails and once in a while in the sandpits, so it would be for light use. What machine do you think would be good for a first timer? I have suggested some machines but she would like more opinions.

The Raptor 250 should be a great quad for her. The 250EX is such a turd and the Raptor 250 will beat the 300EX in every aspect.

300ex. Good for beginners who have someone to show them the ropes. Won't outgrow it either.

400ex. Enough power if she can handle it, good in 2nd gear even if she can't.

300ex, 400ex,z400,raptor 250, 350 are all good choices, id take her to go look at them and sit on those choices and let her decide.

Everyone's sayin Raptor 250 and sayin it will kill a 300ex but as far as I know it hasn't even COME OUT YET.

I have seen no reviews in mags and if theres no reviews or hasn't even hit the showroom floor, the trx90 could smoke it, you don't know, so thats like me saying the 2090 F-250 is going to be the fastest truck in the world, but nobody's even heard nor seen it so how would they know?

If its not here and has no mags on it, then it could be junk.

Once again 300ex.

Because most people on this site is spoiled brats with Honda's and they make stories up about how their Honda beat a Yamaha or how Yamahas are no good.
I spoke to a guy at a track and he mentioned that the new Raptor 250 is a great machine, not super fast but fast enough to have super fun on.
I then asked him what he thought would be a all around better machine between the 250EX and Rator250 and he said the Raptor no questions ask.
He also mentioned that the Raptor 250 will be very closed to the 300EX if not faster and better handling than the 300EX.

You really aren't giving enough info. All I know is she is a women.

I was gonna ask age, height, and weight, but im assuming that is confidental, lol.

Can she ride a clutch? Is she lookin to cruize on an automatic.... Maybe a utility?

Depending on someones experience and common knowledge, whether it be a 450r, or 250ex, anyone can get hurt, on the first 5 -10 seconds.

My personal opinion on a beginner bike, I would say a 300ex or 400ex. Power is very smooth. But it depends on the person. Make sure she sits on the atvs shes interested in, and takes test rides before picking one out.

Good luck.

z 400 is a no no for a first rider the power is not right for a newbie its not stable enough with its power for a newbie either trust me if the riders not gunna lean much but decides to try and rail it through a corner a z400 is not the bike to be on the highest i would reccomend is a 300ex/raptor350 but if u really want put her on a 400ex and no more

Yeh, we have Hondas cuz this is/was EXRiders.com, those are Hondas.

And he said the Yamaha's would be better, he obvioulsy favors Yami's. Now how can he say its gonna be faster than the 300ex? At least 32cc's bigger, with 4 valves and built like that for Years. MAINLY on the fact that my 300ex would beat 350 warriors so HOW is a Yami 250 going to keep up with a 300ex if the 350 even can't?

And let me say something else, I don't know of ANYTHING that handles like a Honda, I know of NO Yami that handles good, let me think, 250r, 450r, 400ex, 300ex, ONLY good handle/chassis build in my mind is Honda.

Your making this new Raptor Wanna-be sound like its the new 450.

My thoughts.

Fact: My YFZ450 will handle better than any of your Honda's :chinese:
Fact: I will challenge you to come to my local track and race me motocross style.
Fact: You will lose.
Fact: Honda riders always b|tch every time someone recommends a Yamaha!

Somehow those dont seem like facts... and no a YFZ will not handle better than "any of your hondas" Stock for stock a YFZ is better handling than a 450R, but thats about where that ends...

Plus, Hondas are the most reliable machines ever. Period. I can prove it.

All of my friends have

03 KFX400 - Just had to put a whole clutch in it.

05 YFZ - Just had to have a whole motor rebuild his piston/rod shattered for no aparent reason no lie.

04 YFZ - Constantly having problems with chain/sprockets. Also has trouble starting when cold.

97 Blaster - Oil leaks everywhere, need to be rebuilt, the thing sucks. Lucky if it starts.

04 KX125 - Just had it rebuilt, wont start, has to start in gear. Fouls plugs left and right.

03 Mojave - Just got back because his tranny was shot.

My 03 250EX has been beaten to hell and back. It has been flipped upside in a lake and I have absoluty no problems with it.

My 03 400EX is also beaten to hell. I take bigger hills and fly WFO open twice as much as any of my freinds. No problems whatsoever.

I could go on and on with more machines.

These are just my experiences with my friends machines. I know that some of it might be avoidable because of proper maiteniece. I understand that. But I am just sick of people ragging on Hondas because they might be "slower" than the rest in stock or even modified form or have "bad" designs or flaws.

Personally, Ill drop speed for reliability anyday.

If she is new to clutch I would say 250EX due to the Sport clutch. If you want to learn more about the 250Raptor, Go to Quad magazine, They did a write up.

If you are referring to me, I did NOT make any of that up. And not only am I talking about Yami's, Kawi's and others also. I dont 'hate' others besides Honda, I am justs saying I hate when people hate Hondas for no apparent reason. I have ridden most of those machines I have talked about. I have no major dislike for the others. I just prefer Honda for the reliablitly factor alone.

Easy Hoss. I am saying honda just for the sport clutch.A sport clutch will not stall if you come to a stop without pulling the clutch in. Acording to Quad magazine the Raptor 250 is probably the best 250 on the market. I think the 250EX lags because of the shaft drive, But on the other hand thats 1 less mantainence item.

400exrider707
07-02-2007, 07:38 AM
She isn't "new" to clutches, but shes never owned a quad. She can ride my 450R and take off using the clutch surprisingly well, but once she's in gear she usually just putts around in first. Basically forward momentum is enough top speed for her. I think if she rides more she will enjoy speeding up a little bit. We put her on an LT80 last winter and I think she had more fun on that than anything haha. The new 250EX wouldn't be a bad choice with the new sport clutch, it would definitely help her bridge the gap from auto to manual. Any other opinions, besides how good a yfz handles?

TRUE - how do you rest a cast?

Pretty much all of the 250 class will do her good. Maybe a 300EX or a 350 raptor or warrior. I dunno.

No one can give you an answer. Go to a dealership, and test ride a few. Since she will be riding it, her opinion is the only important one, not anyones on here..

Test ride one at the dealership? Thats funny....

Not looking for a definitive answer, just some opinions and maybe some suggestions. I know whats out there, and I've suggested stuff for her to get, she just wanted some other opinions on the subject. She is the one who asked the question under my name anyways. Thanks for all the replies so far guys.;)

Why is that funny? You don't want to buy a brand new one... . Go to a dealership and test ride one. Whats so hard about that? A few dealerships around here have tracks in the back so you can test ride if your looking to buy.

Test ride, and leave. Simple as that.

No such thing as a test ride at any of the dealerships I've ever been to.
