Ok so i'm going to buy a 450, used somwhere from a 2002-2005 most likely and I need your guys help. I ride a lot of trails but also a lot of fields, dirt roads, and track. I'm really leaning into a mx bike but a trail bike would be nice with the light and diff gearing.... but i don't want to have any trouble beating any mx bikes that come against me, idk if thats too clear. Anyway if it was up to you guys what bike would you buy?

Well, i know of people owning crf 450's, which are the least snappiest of them all, asking for way to tone down the power. I fi were just to ride sand pits and rec riding. I would go for either a 250f or maybe even a 250 2stroke. The 450's just have way to much unusable power for a beginner.

Other things you might want to fill us in on are your,

riding stats,( level)

Height

weight etc

If a 450 is to much, then why would you reccomend a 250 two smoke? If I were you go with a 250f.

Well I sold my kfx and want something faster than a 450 quad, i dont want to buy a 250 than move up, i just want to buy the 450 no matter how stupid that seems.. ive ridden the drz and while it was too much power for me for the first time, after a month of two I should be able to handle it as it wasn't that bad. Im really set on a 450 so I just need the advice to which one. Oh and can you wire a light to the mx 450's? I cant see why not but im just wondering.

my weight is 190 lbs
height 6 maybe 6'1"

i was impressed with the 05 RMZ 450, and im sure you could find one for around 4K range... a 250 2 stroke isnt a bad choice either, they can be picked up cheaper and are just as fast, not to mention they will make you a better rider

I love kids who still think the 250 pings are the same as the 450f's. Or the 250f's are the same as a 125, I'm 240 on a 125. It's not the most powerdul bike in the world, although i did make a commitment that if i did get down to 190. I will change my mind on getting a 450 to a 250f.

For your height and weight, would highly reccomend looking at a 250f motocross bike or a big bore trail bike.

Go to www.thumpertalk.com (mostly 4 -stroke dirtbikes) and make a post there, they will probably be able to help you little more.

what are you trying to say the 250 pingers are faster or slower then the 450s as well as 125s and 250's your post wasn't clear ?

06-30-2007, 12:33 PM
the 125s and 250 4 strokes are still very compareable, same with the 250 2 strokes and 450s, very close, The 4 strokes just get much better traction and are alot easier to ride

The 250f's are just completely different machines, I've ridden a yz144, and I,ve riden an 04 rmz 250. The way the power is put down is just completly different. Also where the power is located in the rpm range. The 4 - strokes are just the new technology, were going to have to get used to it. they're easier to ride and you can go at a harder pace for a much longer period of time.As far as the 250 pings and 450's. The 250 pinger's power is almost the same as a 250f although with a screaming topend power.450's are completly reingeneered machines. I mean where in the world would you think of putting efi on 2-stroke. The 08 rmz 450 has efi and so will honda probably. The 125 is in a calss of it's own (2 - stroke school boy), and thats bascily it. Unless your a serious sandbagger. I mean, look at Steve Lamson, he was a professional champion back in the day, on an even slower cr125 that he rode at hangtown. He got beat by 34 250f's
(Considering he was a national champ.) Every now and then i would go to watch the races at atco or englishtown and I will see maybe four 125's in the c-class. and 1 in the b-class, And boy o boy, does pj desantis have talent. He basicly owns pro/am on a rmz250, but cant even pull a top 10 in the b-class, on a 125.

To be honest with you, neither is faster, but i still cannot figure how you can even compare a 125 to a 250'f. or an 85 to these new 150f's.The 2-strokes just dont stand a chance, I'm a 2-stroke guy at heart, thats why I own one. But when that day comes and i rack up enough cash for a 4-stroke, I'm going to be all over it.

lol, here we go.

There hasnt been much dramatic changes on the rmz450 at all,There was one bad year where 4strokes had valve issues and it was 04, Not every bike had it but a majority did. The 05 rmz's had some issues with the engine locking up,rmz 250 had issues with over heating 04-06.If your planning on buying a 4-stroke these really should be the least of your worries.

Engine locking up? ...lack of maintenance. the cooling issues on the 1st gen rmz/kxf were fixed in 05.

Sure, talk to Zach (alloymx428/mxfourtwoeight) about what happened to his 05 kxf. The guy at the DEALER even, told me to stay away from those bikes. As a sales men, trieing to sell left over models, even ragged down on the bike.

LACK OF MAINTENANCE! His motor wasn't stock either. from what he has told me it was far from it.

EDIT: since when do you listen to a sales rep? i'm sure he wanted to make a sale on one of the newer 06 and 07 models before he got rid of that 05 because he knew that someone else would pick it up for cheap if you didn't.

Did you ever consider a cr500??? I rode one, they have the torque and bottom end of a 4 stroke and arm ripping 2 stroke powerband. I couldn't believe this bike, it was out of control. More power than just about anybody could use, all over too!!!!. On another company, ktm isn't to be forgotten about. Alot of woods riders love the ktm300exc, it has alot of torque down low and does everything great. I have a ktm450exc, its an awesome bike. Its easy to ride, but it hauls. Their 520/525 is something that is talked about alot too. I have a crf450r(well, its motorless right now), it is a monster, a heavier flywheel will make it easier to ride. I am partial to 2 strokes, they are far easier to work on and just as fast(but it takes more work to go fast on them).

I actually maintained that bike really well, it was just too modifed and things like that happen. It wasn't the bikes fault.
