theres a guy ive known for a few years now who's got a 69 camaro sitting by his garage. im in and out of his garage all the time, yet never paid close attention to it. figured it was a junker.

now one of my good friends just went out and bought a 72 chevelle. supposedly has a 383 stroker in it. he decided to take it down to the frame and redo it. well knowing that i can do body work and paint, he asked for help. i of course agreed, so long as he keeps the fridge stocked with beverages.

then i got to thinking that im going to do all this work to his car, and he's going to have one sweet muscle car to scoot around in. after a few drinks the one night i decided that i was going to build myself a car that was faster than his and a few other cars around here.
so i started looking around, and found a few basket cases...a goat, firebird, charger. everything was too expensive for the shape they were in. then i remembered the 69 sitting by my buddies garage. ran into him last night, and asked him what his plans are for it, thinking it'd need a motor, trans, the whole shebang.

well... turns out the car was last used for drag racing. there have been two owners that he knows of before him. the first guy built the car, then got busted for drugs and sent to prison. he gave the car to a buddy of his, who drove it on the street and sold it to my buddy because he was scared to drive it.

turns out the damn thing has an extremely built 350 in it. he wasnt sure what all was in it, so i have to go see the previous owner to find out. its got an automatic with a manual valvebody and a transbrake. 4.56 gears in a dana 60 rear end. 4 link rear suspension, tubbed out, roll cage, racing harnesses, you name it, it's ready to race. it's been sitting for over a year now since he bought it and god knows how long before he bought it. has a complete fiberglass front end on it. i believe that the rear quarters were hacked up to fit bigger tires, so they will be getting replaced, along with the doors and whatever else i find.

haha now the reason for this post. i was looking for quarter panels, and ive noticed that 67 and 68 are the same, yet 69 is different. i was wondering if anyone knows these cars well enough to tell me what differences im going to encounter between the three years

heres a few pics. theres not a rust hole anywhere on it. just surface rust from a ****ty paintjob. the motor needs some cleening up, but i pulled the aircleaner and the carb works perfectly, not a spec of garbage in it. thats about as far as i got today. i'll get some more pictures of it once i get it towed to my shop:macho

That's coo....my dad has a 70 and half RS that he has had since he was 18-19yrs old. It still has the original vinyl top with ZERO cracks or tears. It needs a lil work, so my 4 brothers and I are going to start on it here pretty soon. It's not a rust bucket or anything just needs some TLC. It has a 350sb with 2bbl carb, headers and exhaust.

I think the 67-69s overall were the same except the grill+headlights were different and I think the 69s had the "gills" in front of the rear wheels in the rear quarters. I'm not 100% on this so maybe the more knowledgable peeps will chip in.

according to my buddy that i am buying it off of, he has seen this car bring the front wheels off the ground. i'll believe it when i'm sitting in the drivers seat and it's in the air. not getting my hopes up yet. unless the motor has enough nuts to twist my neck in half when i launch it, it's getting redone.

Steve-d that 72 chevelle with the 383 storker didnt by any chance come from carbondale pa did it and if it did is it red with black racing stripes

my buddy bought the chevelle over here in south canaan (on the other side of salem mountain from carbondale) it's got SS badges on it but it's not a true SS. it's red with black racing stripes on the hood and trunk. the guy he bought it off of couldn't get it runnning, so we rewired everything with MSD and got it running. i think the timing is off a bit.

the car has definately been in the area for a while now, so maybe it's the same car you are thinking of. its got wide rear tires that scrape the fenders with four of us in it:macho

i'll snap some pics of it later:p

Dude that was my buddies its a malibu with the ss grill the guy got it when we were seniors in high school. Rob Stout was the kids name. that thing has some balls he used to just do burn outs all the time. he got it from an old lady her son had it for a while then it sat in a barn we found it just by driving around one day and the barn happened to be open so we stopped and asked if it was for sale the lady said $3000 and its yours. The rest was history. One question does it still have a gatorade bottle under the hood of a coolant overflow?

small world man. the gatorade bottle was in there when he brought it to my buddies garage. he took it out though:p

i know of a guy named rob stout. he's bout 20 years old. his old man owns cruiser world over in hamlin. wouldn't happen to be the same guy would it?

i've heard from several people that the cars got some snot to it. we took it out once, but i think the timings off in it or something. bogs right out when you step on it.

if its a built 350, its could be very well a 383, as the 350 is the base engine for the 383, hell of a motor that 383 is, very much more grunt than the stock 350. my favorite motor of all time, is the 396, found in the SS chevelles, you want a powerful motor, theres one that will give you whiplash, although at work, we have sold a few of the 572s, that have gone into some sweet rides, and they are known to be the king of the street for motors, once i get my money in order, i plan on haveing a Nova, like my pops had, and putting the 396 in it, if it dont already have one....

the passenger side rocker is shot, and the front fenders are starting to bubble a bit.
he knows nothing about body work, so he's having me do it all. i've got a car and a truck to paint, then i'm going to get started on it. i plan on taking the body right off the car. do it once and do it right. should be a damn fine car once i get done with it. :macho

he'd just better hope that i get most of his done before i pull my camaro next to it:devil:

i'll agree with the 383 comments. definately a nasty motor. the motor in the camaro im going to buy started as a 350. the guy that built the car and motor is in jail the last i heard, and would never tell anyone what was done to it. but if it's built halfway as well as i've been told, it'll have no problem eating that 383 chevelle for lunch:devil:

The only interchangeable body panels are the hood, cowl, and rear deck lid. 67-69 glass (except for 67 door glass) will interchange, as will some of the interior pieces. Most of the brake and suspension will interchange between 67 and 69 also.

Good luck with the car . I just got back from some drags this past weekend ... a lot of nasty cars out there . I was talking to a guy my dad knows and he's building a ProMod 69 Camaro ... the whole body is going to be Carbon Fibre and weighs 75lbs ... the whole car will weigh about 1900lbs.

Lots of potential with the Camaro .... pull the motor and drop in a 454 . My uncle had one in his and he was running high 9s , low 10s in the 1/4 . Pull the wheels right through the 60 foot. That was running on a set of E.T Streets. He started cutting up the car to tub it , put a cage in and brought the motor back 15" into the firewall , then lost interest . The car sat for 3 years and he sold it for $500 without the motor. If I'd have known , I'd have bought it ... but he never told me he was selling . :grr:

i don't have the cash flow right now to go all out on it. once i buy it here i'll find out what i've got to work with motor wise. it's already got a fiberglass front end on it. and the hell with the 454... if i buy a motor for it it's going to get a 572. i ain't ****in around with it if i decide to go all out:devil:

big motors big horsepwer but alot of extra weight and if the suspension was set up for a small block the suspension will have to be redone . My motors for my dirt cars are 355 and the big boy is around 600 to the wheels . Small block motors may give up displacement but horsepwer isisnt everything . In drag racing to me its better to underpower the track and get great 60 ft times instead of spinning halfway down. Dont get me wrong if your goin serious with this car you got a heck of a project . I put money on it that frame is twisted behind firewall and not knocking the car but you may be better off trying to find a shell and start there . Also I would look were the lower control arms bolt in and look for stress cracks .

Well if your going to go "ALL OUT" why dont you go with say a all forged World Products 632 with a 250 shot of spray?

even if i leave the 350 in it, it will be getting some form of forced induction. i prefer a nice blower over nitrous though, but to each his own

I would look more into that motor thats in it . pop the heads off, You might find a 400SB in there. I had one and the motor was wild.

I'm a camaro guy, but more so a Trans Am guy. :)

IMO, the small block thats in it already will be enough fun. It would be great to start on, and you'd be surprised how far you can actually go with one. I don't know what your plans are for it, or if you plan to drive it on the street at all?

That's gonna be a cool project...good luck! Quite a few pieces are interchangeable between the '67s and '68s, however, the '69s are totally different. The wheel well openings are a lot flatter, so fenders and quarter panels won't fit. The seats and dash board/guages are a lot different as well. Things such as engine parts, brakes, suspension, wheels, rear ends are interchangeable though. Classic Industries, The Paddock, and Year One catalogs would be some good places to start looking for parts.

Here is a pic of my '68 Firebird and then one of my '70 Dodge Charger.

yes for the time being the small block is going to stay in it. once i get the car it's getting completely stripped right down to the frame. about the only body parts i'm going to need are rear quarters and doors. shouldn't be that hard to get ahold of.

the enterior of the car consists of a roll cage, two race seats, 5-point harnesses, shifter, steering wheel, and gages. and a dash panel and door panels. the tubs are getting redone when the new quarters go into it.

it will be street legal and driven more on the street than at the track. just have to come up with the cash for it first:macho
