Does the cover have to be removed to replace the mechanical seal? I am ordering parts and want to make sure I have everything I need when I get ready to start. Here is what I am ordering:

2 water pump cover gaskets
1 mechanical seal
1 oil seal
1 bearing

Thanks.

If you want to take the chance to damage the seal while installing it go ahead. I would remove the side cover and put it up on a table to work on the water pump.

take the cover off ....put it in the oven arouund 150 degrees.15 min ..put the mec seal in the freezer for 15 min. the heat opens the bore in the case and the cold shrinks the seal. put the case on the counter and press the seal in. carefull not to shock it cause its porcelin and breaks real easy. it should drop right in with very little effort. i know it sounds wierd but i used a round wooden handle from a hammer to push the mec seal in.

So should I replace the oil seal on the kick starter with the side cover off, or is it reusable? Sorry about this. I am the only person I know with a 250.

The seal is reuseable if not damaged. If it leaks after the install of the clutch cover it is easy to replace without removing clutch cover.

look at seal real close . if its cracked or dry rooted or super caked with crude replace it its cheap insurance. dont forget to lube it up every once in a while.

if ya havent replaced the mechanical seal already. do yaself a favor and apply some petroleum jelly to the seal where it makes contact with the porcelin.
