May not be what you are looking for, but the aftermarket service mannuals for the 400ex generaly have pretty good illustrations and directions. Good enough that I was able to install a new cam on mine. Wish I had the book in front of me so I could tell you the publisher name.... You can pick these books up from a number of shops.... Assuming you have one in you area. If not try Amazon... It should be a pretty easy job provided you have some decent tools and some mechanical know how. Good luck and I'll post the publisher name tonight if I don't forget :-0

Here's a link to the Haynes mannual....
http://www.amazon.com/HAYNES-MANUALS-Haynes-Manuals-T701024/dp/B000OO2SS4/ref=sr_1_3/104-3913491-4871164?ie=UTF8&s=automotive&qid=1182519975&sr=8-3
remove both rear wheels
take off the right rear hub
loosen the chain and take off the rear sprocket....leave the 4 retaining bolts loose
take the caliper off the disk...tie them up out of the way
loosen the axle nuts...remember that they are reverse threads...
remove the clip and then take the axle nuts off...then the collar
remove the brake hub
remove the circlip, then the brake stay
drive the axle out from the throttle side to the clutch side
do the same with the bearing carrier...
for pics, just go to any website that has a parts microfiche(an exploded view of the parts) and use that as a guide...most have that area of the 400ex as 2 different diagrams...the swingarm and the rear axle/drivechain

rear axle/drive chain (http://216.37.204.206/Alba/Honda_OEM/HondaATV.asp?Type=13&A=123&B=40)
