well there are alot of 04 quads out there, which one do you have? since your in the 400 ex section I'll go with that. Use thicker oil, add air scoops, bigger oil cooler.

Synthetics oil runs cooler than petro basesd oils,

Keep the fins on the head clean and free of debris. Yes, even during riding. If the fins get swamp muck all over them, they can't very well disipate the heat.

Don't idle for any lengtht of time. If not moving shut it off.

These things are high tech but they are air cooled.

Engine Ice should help..

Nevermind, I was thinking of something else

"Overheats like crazy"? Can you explain that in more detail? What kind of riding do you do? What indications are there that the engine is overheating? Is it stock or modified?

Without more information about what's going on I have no idea what would be an appropriate suggestion.

Yea do you mean it quits running because its so hot, or its blowing oil out the blow by?? Also make sure in further posts tell what bike your talking about.

Me and my buddy ride the heck out of his 400ex in 100 degree weather in oklahoma. Its never quits on us or had any signs of powerloss.

also 20-50 motor oil is better when your running in hot air temps.

if possible you may go one size richer on jetting.

Just run 20w-50 oil and a cooler spark plug. Switch from a NGK DPR8Z to a DPR9Z.

Changing the heat range of the spark plug will not change the running temperature of the engine.

a cold spark plug has a shorter insulator nose and absorbs more combustion chamber heat. This heat travels a shorter distance, and allows the plug to operate at a lower internal temperature. A colder heat range is necessary when the engine is modified for performance, subjected to heavy loads, or is run at high rpms for a significant period of time. The colder type removes heat more quickly, and will reduce the chance of pre-ignition/detonation and melting or damage to the firing end. (Engine temperature can affect the spark plug's operating temperature, but not the spark plugs heat range).

YES IT BLOWS OIL.. I NEEDED PISTON RING BUT I KEPT RUNNIN HARD N E WAYZ. I RIDE DUNES AND MX. I GO TO GLAMIS SOMTIMES THEN COEM BACK HERE AND RIDE LAKELAND MX. ITS SLIGHTLY MODIFIED. IM DOING 440 BIG BORE, HOTCAM, HEAVY DUTY SPRINGS, PORT, SPARKS FULL, AND SOME MORE. I WERE RACE BOOTS AND THE HEAT OFF THE MOTOR KILLS ME THREW EM. I RACE NEW ALPINES SO IT AIN THE BOOT

WHAT PART? I BLEW UP THE FOURWHEELER BECAUSE THE RINGS WERE BAD AND IT BURNT OUT ALL MY OIL AND BLEW THE TOP END. HOWEVER IT GETS WAAAY TO HOT... LIKE THE IDLE GOES UP BAD AND THE HEAT OFF THE MOTOR IS KILLER. HEAT, SAND, AND SAM PEARCE (ME) R THE THREE WORST THINGS FOR A FOURWHEELER. I WANT TO ELIMINATE AS MUCH HEAT AS POSSIBLE

ALSO I GO TO GLAMIS IN THANKSGIVING AND IN AUGEST SO SAND IS GOIN AWAY EITHER. JUST NEED TO REDUCE HEAT

Ok I get it now. What you probably had was an intake leak (past the carb). It's air leaking in without the carb metering it. So you get a lean mixture, causing high idle. Lean mills run hot and a common thing on the ex is for the cylinder to warp. The cylinder actually becomes out of round. Thus burning oil and led up to your meltdown. Check you intake boot and clamp for cracks & leaks.
