It's a beach, temps are around 85ish and cools down at night.
It's always perfect riding weather there.

Here's a link: http://www.reserveamerica.com/ca/Oceano_Dunes_Svra/Regional_Map/r/generateBrowseMap.do?topTabIndex=CampgroundMap&map=PARK&parkId=120065&agency=CA

It's an official OHV area: http://www.ohv.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1207

A few pics..
P.s. Mexico is not far from you. San Felipe beach riding would be close for you!!

i got a good solid 4 hours of balls to the wall riding in last night... hopefully i go out before then, but if not that should hold me over till labor day when i go to coral pink, and then im only 6 weeks out from gordons well...

its been raining quite a bit here in phoenix, so last night 7 of us headed out to the desert behind a lake, and hauled through all the sandy washes and all around the trails... ended up leaving at liek 2am... with no dust and riding in the washes, and just hauling, it sure was a fun time...

the only casualtly was my buddy on a raptor 700 was following me and there was a sharp turn, well i powered through it and made it ok... he 2nd guessed himself being able to take it for the speed we were going, and instead of powering out of it hit the brakes and slid into the berm/wall and bent his tie rod... fortunately we were able to bend it back enough for him to continue riding the rest of the night...

I cant wait till dune season.Ive been racing most of this summer doing the itp quadcross races at Glen Helen and just want some free riding in the sand! Its always fun to go out and hit some nice jumps at the dunes. I live about 10 minutes away and its still to hot to ride unless you go early in the morning or right at sunset, I think I cant wait a few more weeks though!

i hear you on that...

my YFZ is done and ready to go- all i need to do is throw the paddles on it...

however, that is the only bike that is done...

I got my bottom end closed up on my 250r last night, so now i need to throw the top end on and throw it back in the frame, and do a couple things to clean it up and get it sold...

i have the 05 raptor that i was planning on just buying a pipe and filter for it, but it appears that plans have changed... last night i went and looked at an 04 raptor that im going to go pick up tonight...the 04 is a little too rough for my liking, but it has +3 a-arms with elka quad rate piggy backs, a +1.75 lonestar swing arm with elka rear shock, and +3 axle as well... im getting it for a smoking deal, so my plan is to strip the suspension and everything else off the bike and throw it on my 05, and then sell the 04 with all the stock parts for what i hope will be $400 more than what i bought it for with all the aftermarket parts...

so that is going to be some work on the two raptors...

i still have a few things to do to my 185 as well, not to mention the 2 odysseys that my buddy and i are working on that will be back from the powdercoater this week!

For a quick fix, I make an overnight trip, but I don't get to the dunes until about 9pm, and ride a few hours at night, and then get up early and ride before it gets hot.

Soak your shirt in water, it will keep you cool for about 10 minutes before it's dry. Soak your shirt, and then put a dry shirt OVER it, and it will keep you cool for an hour, the heavier the overshirt, the longer it will last. People will wonder why you are riding in a sweater in 110 degree heat, but it works great. Obviously you need to keep moving for it to work.

I've made lots of dune trips in the middle of summer heat using the 2-shirt trick.

ive heard of this trick to keeping cool... sounds like its legit. keep in mind (for us air-cooled bike owners) your bike still needs to keep cool as well. dont do you much good if your doin alright while your bike is goin into nuclear meltdown mode... :D

so whats the weather looking like out there??? im goin soon as it comes down off the tripple digits. :macho

I got so anxious, I built this to ride this year. For the little side of the hill and to dune the hell out of.

08-25-2007, 10:24 PM
why do you not ride a YFZ R3?

you have a raptor so obviously it doesnt appear that youre anti-yamaha... there has to be a reason for it...

it wasnt even a debate which 450 i would get, and you've been through several bikes in the past couple years, but never a YFZ...

also, how do those FASST bars work out in the dunes?

Becuase this 450R makes 62 on C12. Not bad for a stock bore stock stroke TRX. I wish the same could be said for a YFZ. A YFZ after 55 HP gets very expensive.

And Ive always been more comfortable on Hondas.

Ill put up a pic of the Raptor later. Its turbo charged now:D

so youre saying that the Honda responds better to mods, and modded is more reliable than the YFZ?

i know that keeping the motor stock with bolt ons i've found the YFZ to be head and shoulders about the LT and R, but dont have much experience with them built...

what all is done to that bike to get it up to 62 horse?

Well we are closing in on Dune season.

I checked the weather station at Gordons Well the past 2 days and it was 118 on Thursday and 116 today. But the good news is it got down to 103 on Thursday night!

Let the cooling trend begin!

Reading this thread is killing me. Pretty much just need new paddles and I'm set. I think Tuesday I'll drive up to Fullerton and buy some Sand skate 1's. Trying to talk myself into the comp cuts, but at $175 each plus wider rims its a tough call.
Her is a pic of glamis the last afternoon ride last year.

wooohooo!!! 103F !!! its just that much closer!

man i am totally just itching to head out there. i whent out to corral canyon just to run my bike around since its close.

i still need to find a trailer and hitch for my 4Runner to haul the bike with it. ever since i recharged my A/C in it ive been more inclined to take it over my pickup. 20*F air coming out of the vents makes for a nice drive out there :D

48 more days until my first trip of many out. I recently moved even closer to the dunes, now I'm only an hour and a half away to Glamis. Pending on my wife, I should be able to go out nearly every other weekend if I play my cards right. So nice in Alpine, so close to the dunes!

Hey DuneSurfer, how big of a group do you go out with? Do you mainly go to Glamis? We stay out at the washes, usually wash 5-10. Our group consists of about 5 trailers, and we really only ride quads. One of the guys in our group owns a rail, and I have a Ranger, but other then that we're strictly quads. If you go pretty often maybe we can ride sometime. Let me know.

The trailer is 14', When I bought it I had just purchased a new 4runner and I needed something I could tow with it. Also It was just me going, so I didn't need anything bigger.

I go with a lot of different people, sometimes I camp at the washes, sometimes on Gecko. I'm out there 60-70 days a year so I'm always looking for people to ride with. I keep my trailer near the dunes, so its easy to get out.
