Hey guys just want to say thanks for checkin this out and I hope it helps if you have not done this yet with your K&N filter.
We went riding this weekend in extreme dust conditions and I normally run with an open airbox lid so I decided to put the stock one back on. Guess what I still ended up with a dust caked filter. And as we all know with K&N filters the Outerwears catches some of the dust but not all of it and a lot of dirt still ends up in the filter. So I did a little experiment with a stock air filter I had laying around not being used.
You’ll need a stock filter and a razor knife.
1. take the stock filter and cut with the razor knife around the top and bottom rubber pieces. (the filter is a 2 layer filter the outer layer is what you’ll use). Pull the outer foam layer off the filter.
2. Oil the foam filter up and pull it down over the K&N.
You now have a new prefilter. I’ve used this same style of filter setup on my racing go karts for 3 years now and the foam prefilter catches pretty much 90% of the dust keeping the main filter clean. So when the foam prefilter gets dirty I just pull it off and either wipe it off or install a clean one.(which is what I may plan on doing with my 400EX filter)
Sorry for the long write up and here are the pics that show my progression.
