Hey guys just want to say thanks for checkin this out and I hope it helps if you have not done this yet with your K&N filter.

We went riding this weekend in extreme dust conditions and I normally run with an open airbox lid so I decided to put the stock one back on. Guess what I still ended up with a dust caked filter. And as we all know with K&N filters the Outerwears catches some of the dust but not all of it and a lot of dirt still ends up in the filter. So I did a little experiment with a stock air filter I had laying around not being used.

You’ll need a stock filter and a razor knife.

1. take the stock filter and cut with the razor knife around the top and bottom rubber pieces. (the filter is a 2 layer filter the outer layer is what you’ll use). Pull the outer foam layer off the filter.

2. Oil the foam filter up and pull it down over the K&N.

You now have a new prefilter. I’ve used this same style of filter setup on my racing go karts for 3 years now and the foam prefilter catches pretty much 90% of the dust keeping the main filter clean. So when the foam prefilter gets dirty I just pull it off and either wipe it off or install a clean one.(which is what I may plan on doing with my 400EX filter)

Sorry for the long write up and here are the pics that show my progression.

Why not just use a Uni air filter.

because a K&N does flow more air. i have ran both, and my bike runs better with teh K&N than the Uni, even with proper jetting for each. i love my K&N, but currenly am running an uni due to the drought in my area, it is nothin but dust.

if you take the stock filter and slip it over the K+N will you loose air flow and power? if so wuld u have to rejet it ??

Will the outerwears still fit over both? And what would be a good way to wash the stock filter?

that's one problem i did run into with the outerwears. mine did not fit but there might be one out there big enough to fit.

and the reason i didn't choose to run just a uni is well when your on a riding trip and your filter gets clogged are you seriously going to wash your filter and wait for it to dry before you ride again? i seriously doubt it. just take an extra foamie outer like i made already oiled up and when it gets clogged put a clean one on and go ridin.

as for airflow. it may slightly decrease flow but not enough to even notice. if your running an open lid it's already getting all the air it needs so i really wouldn't think you would have to rejet. i will let you all know when i run it this weekend.

as for cleaning the foamie i use just regular K&N filter cleaner or even Simple Green or Purple Power Clean will do the trick.

www.outerwearsracing.com has a custom pre filter section so you can get a outerwears for whatever size you need.

Just another desperate attempt to make a K&n filter like a uni.....

hey i'm just adding that to keep my main filter cleaner so i don't have to buy like 2 or 3 K&N's to take with me ridin. all that adds up. i'm just sharing this tip with people who want to try to save a little $$$ and use their stock filter that they may have just lying around not being used for anything.

everyone is entitled to their opinion and i respect that. but i'll stick with my K&N.

hey guys i ran it this weekend with this set up and it ran just fine. no noticeable power loss and i did not need to rejet. it did act just a little funny when i went to start it up but then it ran just fine.
