Well decide what kind of riding you want to do.Then decide if you want a utility or a sport quad.

I like sport riding I guess, cause I don't like heavy quads since I'm so light and I hate mud! lol

Well ypur in colorado so i dont think youll be focusing on dunes. And id stick with Honda or Yamaha. You could get a Honda 450R or 400EX advantage of the 400 would be reverse on the newer models.Yamaha you could get a YFZ450 but no reverse or a Raptor 700 iv always kinda liked them.Or theres the new Kawisaki which hasa reverse but hasnt been out all to long so personally id wait and let them work out the bugs after a year or so but thats just me.

My dad goes down to Cali to umm pismo dunes I think it's called, and rides so if I get one I'll probably be riding the dunes.

Well if your ridin the dunes then reverse wouldnt really be a issue.Assuming you can handle a 450 id just get a 450R or YFZ450.But it never hurts to test ride a few quads and see what you like.

400 is a good beginner race quad.
But dunes arent as technical and there is a little more room for error and learning so id go for a 450. Yamaha or honda.

How is the power on those 450's? I don't want a monster, just something with smooth easy going power.

A 450 is what the pros race on and such their race quads. If you want a little less youll probly be better off with a 400 or somthing of the likes.and i dont know if money is an issue for you or not but if it is find a friend who knows quads well and have them go about with you and you might be able to find a nice used quad.

Dont get above a 450 if you dont want a monster. imo from what you say a 400 sounds perfect, id get a z400 1.good shocks 2. great trail machine 3.great all around bike. hondas also good too. If you want a automatic sport get a kfx 700, they're a bit big tho

IMO ride a a Z400, KFX400, Z400, all the 450s and see which one you like.

I've ridden my dads Raptor 660 with some aftermarket stuff on it and yeah it's a monster. I don't want something like that. So a 400 sounds good. What about a TRX400EX? Are they any good?

My dad says a Raptor is a good starter quad, but it is very tall and is kind of scary when I jump it. I like to be a little lower to the ground, I see that white atv ^^ is quite low, I like that.

The 400ex is a great all around quad. It'll pretty much do anything you want it to. Plus there are tons of parts available for, a lot of options for performance upgrades, and the later models (05 and up I think) have reverse.

Get a New 400EX there a great quad, mine is a big bore 440, and it fly's. They are lower to the ground than a raptor too.
