Ok guys I know me and my buddies aren't the only ones to have this, I dont think I've ridden an 04/05 that didn't have this problem. My buddies has gotten continually worse, it is terrible now, and does this on nearly every straightaway. My question is does anyone have fix for this, and what causes it? Is it bent shift forks? Should he replace gears as well based on a visual inspection. It's weird because when it does it, there is no grinding going on, but I'm willing to bet the gears still take some abuse. Any thoughts?

What kind of oil is being used in the tranny side?

How old are clutch springs?

It is a common problem. I have that happen some times if I don't go all the way up with the shifter. ATP Racing has a fix. They do machine work to the stock gears.

Rage ATV has a fix for it also.

His has had Honda red bottle since day 1.

I used honda red bottle, and recently switched to klotz gear oil.

Mine doesn't do it as often as his does.

What exactly is the fix?

I believe they harden the shift forks and gears!

I think the gears and shift forks have to be new to have the process done!

I would assume that these parts are already hardened. Maybe not the shift forks, but the gears would have to be. I dont see how this fixes anything, sure it makes it all stronger, but why does it do it in the first place?

I could see them wanting to make the gearing tougher in the 06+ motors as they had tranny problems, ours are all 04/05 series.

Mines doing the same thing and getting worse. I use Amsoil 10-40. I notice it gets real bad when its been ridden hard or needs new fluid.

Maybe mine doesn't do that as much because I change the oil on both sides after every time out since it was new.

I think it depends a lot on riding style too. My buddy is an all out aggressive rider who isn't afraid to put his machine through its paces. I am more concious about whats going on under me and dont do any hard power shifting (I do powershift but not under high stress/load conditions) we both change oil regularly, he might change it more than me, but he uses his more too. Mine has really only done it enough times to count on one hand in the last two seasons, his does it in nearly every straightaway now.

My son's '05 was doing the same thing, we ended up replacing 6 gears, and one fork, fixed the problem.

Someone mentioned the '06 and '07's, they are actually alot worse than the '04-'05's are. That is the main reason the top pros have switched to '05 quads, too many tranny failures on the new quads.

Yes this is what I was wondering. They all spoke of the builders doing a process on the gears, and I was wondering if it was for all motors or just the 06/07 motors as I knew they were having far more problems with these.

Actually what exactly was the problem with the 06/07 trannies? I have heard dozens of people saying they were no good, but what exactly happened with them? Same thing as the 04/05s but just worse or what?

I'm not sure I ever heard an exact reason. I'm good friends with a pro-am rider and he's bought probably around 6-7 quads, since the '06's came out and has trashed a bunch of trannies, and I mean a bunch! He could usually get maybe two nationals out a set of gears before the dog ears would round off severely, shift forks bend, etc. Although recently he's not had near as many failures on his current '07 bike, and I don't believe he's had anything done to the gears either.

My son's '05 was actually his old quad we bought from him, so I think the issues we experienced may have been generated from his riding. We had two CRF hybrid quads and never had any issues with either CRF motor's trannies with false neutrals, or not going into gear, or coming out of gear.

Email or call Toby at Moto-Xperts. He has a tranny mod he does as well. He'll be doing mine this winter.

I don't really notice it on my 06 or 07, but I have been having the problem for a while now on my 05 engine. I found that it was worse when it was lowered, and for a while thought that was the problem. Maybe I need to look into getting this done!?
