I know theyve put xr650 engines in 400's, but it's still a kinda underpowered engine (i think around 35hp???). Doesnt seem like much for an upgrade, but thats just my opinion.

I highly doubt the xr650 has 35 hp. Im guessing 40-45ish. The stock xr400 motor has around 28-30.

WHAT!!!! the xr650 is making about 45 STOCK with a pipe and filter more like 55! the xr600 was making 35hp back in the xr500 days. i rode an xr650 with filter, pipe, and a hotstart kit, it runs really good and it and it starts easier. the xr650 has more torque than any other bike i have ever ridden

Aye, the XR650R motor is not a HP motor. It tops out at about 55ish hp (from articles I've read, no actual exp with the motor myself) w/ bolt on mods and a piston. But the torque is insane. The watercooled version in a 450r frame would make a great XC racer IMHO. I say 450r frame because it appears to be almost a direct bolt-in and you already have water cooling equipment.

No one has really adressed the second part of your question. I don't know first hand cause i have never ridden a 300ex/xr650 conversion, but i can't imagine it would be very stable or suitable for any riding condition. The 300ex just isnt a good base quad to build a quad with 50 or 60 horses.

my 300ex is well equiped with longer swing arms and wider a arms
the xr600 fits right in(lower case is almost the same)
maybe there arent many horses in th stable but the tourqe is strong and this is what the atv need(its not a light mx atv)
the power band is strong and continus from the bottem end to mid...top end is a little weak but on this small chasis it's quite fast...
