I just got done tearing my 400 apart getting ready to make it into a 440 and was wondering how to retime it.

I thought there would be a silver link on the timing chain like on a car but there is not.

I have not purchased a shop manual yet but I plan to have one before I start to reassemble.

is down on your fly wheel line up the (T) mark and on the cam sprocket line up the timing marks .

I found the ones on the flywheel but there is a mark for tdc compression stroke and 1 for tdc exhaust stroke how do you know which one to use? And there are several marks on the cam sprocket. Which one should it be?

Yeah so how do you find out where the compression strokes is.

im not sure if this is true or not, but i heard that the 400 sparks the spark plug every revolution, both on compression and exhaust. if this is true, then i dont think it really matters if ur on exhaust or compression stroke. all i did when i tore mine down and put it back together is i lined the bottom t mark and then the cam and it runs great.

Just get it to TDC, and if the rockers have play, it is on compression.

Line up the Timing mark when the cam lobes are down. On the timing gear, there are 3 lines. One of them points up, and the other two get lined up parallel to the top of the cylinder head.
