they are different sizes. i believe the 88 is longer than the 86 by like an inch. it does make a difference in which one you use. you can raise or lower the back end of your quad pretty good. hope this helps. Corey

Actually, the 86 and 87 are longer than the 88 and 89, due to the differences in swingarm lengths.

figures i would be wrong on a 50/50 chance. thanks for the correction! now i know too. Corey

So would it be a good idea to run an 86 linkage on an 89, ride height wise?

depends as to where you want the ride height to set at.... the 86-87 bone is gonna make it ride on the average of about 2" lower than the 88-89 dog bone.

ahhh ha! :D and to think i always thought that 88-89's were the transition years because of the short aluminum swingers.

looks like im gonna have to look into those durablue adjustabes as i cant find a good short used stocker.

thanks bro :D

so was there ever a difference in shock lengths?

I am no expert, but I believe that the 86 shock is shorter to work with the longer 86 linkage. The 87 up have a longer shock and shorter linkage. I think

all year Rs had same height, correct??

but longer linkage makes the quad sit lower.. so i think you maybe got it backwards, it maybed used a longer shock to make up for the lower stance
