First a little history. I had a Duncan Racing National Midrange setup with ALL the go-fast parts for about 10 years. I rode it almost exclusively at the dunes in Silver Lake Michigan. I sold that quad about 3 years ago and haven't had once since.

Yesterday i acquired a '94 300EX. The quad is in overall excellent condition, with the exception of the cylinder head. The original head was replaced with one off a donor engine, which I have the bottom end to. While they were at it they bored the cylinder 1st size over and installed a brand new OEM piston. They got about 5 minutes on it before a valve adjuster cam out of the rocker arm, jambed under the cam and broke through to the outside of the head right under the lobe. That's how I bought it. The hole is in a non-critcal area and is being tigged shut.

The donor engine the head came from had a 1st size over Wiseco 11:1 piston in excellent condition. I've miced it and the bore, and have a nice .002" clearance, so in goes the Wiseco for free. That leaves me with a left over OEM piston with maybe 5 minutes on it. The quad also has a White Bros muffler. I've yet to receive it so I don't know if the head pipe is OEM or not. Does WB make a muffler without a new headpipe, or can I assume it'll be an aftermarket pipe when I get it? I'm considering installing a cam but don't want to get too much money in this thing. Is there a cam worth dropping in that won't require replacing the springs? If not, which cam would give me the best all-around performance? I'd like it to be easy to ride for when my daughter gets a little older yet still have good power for dune riding. I've been looking at the Web Cam 254 with .310 lift and 242 duration. Is it worth doing? If not, I guess I'll have to go with something like the 236 or 254 and have to install springs and hardfaced rockers. What do you think? I can use your help because this is the 1st 4-stroker I've tweaked with.

My 300 is not bored out or anything and we put a new Web cam in it and it runs much better now then it did before with the stock cam. I would put a Web cam in it for sure.

I think I struck gold. It turns out this quad has a '01 Raptor rear shock. It also has a welded on bracket that appears to be for 400EX shocks. The head pipe and muffler is a White Brothers E Series (I needed quiet). Turns out the head is ported and may have performance springs. I got it running tonight and it runs great.

Are these racing valve springs and keepers? They are large enough in diameter that I had trouble getting the cap head bolts past them.

You can see the 400EX shock adapter here.

Where should I be with my jetting? It has a 38 pilot and 125 main.

BTW, I only paid $400 for this thing. The top end was off. A valve adjuster had come loose, gotten under the cam lobe and broken through. I had the hole tig welded shut and put it back together with the 11:1 piston of the spare bottom end I got with it. Can beat that for a deal!

I'm looking for a good set of 400EX a-arms. They must have good ball joints/boots, and good bearings/bushings/seals. Looks is not important. I've got 400 shocks on the way. Let me know what you've got.

i'd say 400 bucks was a pretty good deal. i also see that it has some kind of oil cooler on it

It's turning out to be a great little quad, but I've got closer to $1000 in it now. That includes a lot of miscellaneous parts to put it together right, '07 400EX shocks, all new brake pads, and a new battery.
I'm basically done repairing it and putting it back together. I've got to decide if I want to invest in a CDI and perhaps a cam and rockers. It makes it a little more tempting considering it already has the 11:1 piston and ported head with aftermarket springs and keepers. Another $325 and I'd have an almost fully built setup. I'm just not sure if a Web Cam Stage II cam will make enough difference to make it worth it. I'd appreciate your input.
