Trading my little recon in for either a 400ex or a 450R

I know the 400ex has reverse and the 450R doesn't.

But other than that and the 50cc, whats the other differences? Where in power can you feel differences in them, acceleration, top end, all around? i made a similar thread like this a few months ago but in about a month (when i get my replacement parts for my recon) I'm defiantely going down and trading in my quad. So, just let me know why i should get a 450R instead of a400ex. I'm 50/50 on both haha. thanks

Here are the most noticable advantages for both:

400EX is simple, reliable, and the new models have reverse. It is also much easier to lug around, especially on trails.

450r is faster everywhere, from bottom to top, and much easier to get power out of. Better suspention by far...much easier to handle IMO. Stays much cooler than the air cooled EX.

Hmmm....lets see.

I LOVE to jump. I will eventually start racing and will be on race tracks. I do do trail riding but i guess i can always push the quad back. The only thing I'm afraid of, is, say I'm riding somewhere illegal and cops come. I run and a cop is on a 4wheeler or something. I make a wrong turn, and no reverse...i'm screwed....I'm afraid of something like that happening.

Suspension is something I need. Simplicity...well, I guess I don't need it that well since I have a friend who knows everything about the new Kawi 450R since he has one and he can help me out.

I think reverse in my biggest annoyance with not having in the 450R

no., havent ridden either of them. NJ dealerships suck for stuf like that. And in new jersey, its hard to ride somewhere legal that isn't a track. Pretty much everywhere is illegal except the track.

the 400 or the 450 are going to feel like a rocket compaired to your old recon, the 450 dont like to go slow at all (the 06/07 is lower geared than the 04/05)so its a little better but not alot.

the 400 is less maint. than the 450

I have had quads with reverse and when i had it I used it and if i dont I dont miss it. (most reverse driving I do is messing around or backing into garage or off trailer)

the 450 is alot faster so if your going to race it thats a better choice

the 400 is almost undestructable, so if you just want to have a quick quad with good handleing with very little upkeep the 400 is a better fit

the 400ex is bullet proof. the 450r is the best quad ever made. You decide...

i think i'll probably end up with the 450R in the end. I know its probably going to be ridiculous compared to my recon but still, it will be fun. I'm past the stages where I'm not stupid with the stuff I do. I need good suspension. I want speed and to be able to jump far. theres a lot of 400exs around my area and 1 450R so I'll finally be able to beat these guys in my area with a 450R. Also....lol, yeah this is a stupid reason....the 08 elec. start 450R has my fav. color combo, blue and black haha.

And if the 450R is more confusing or just more complicated, that just means i'll have to learn more...lol

uhhm first off you should be able to spin the 450r around if your at a deadend lol cuz i can do it on my 250ex secondly the 450r is not the best quad ever made lol the yfz is the best quad ever made

yfz ? best ever ?

you are entitled to your opinion for sure but I think your in the minority

the 04/05 yfz was faster stock than the 04/05 R
after 06 the yfz fell to the new champ 450R

the yfz is tied with the 700 rappy for second in my book

have you rode the 400 or 450 ? Its like that up here and no reverse really isnt a problem. If you make a wrong turn either blow a quick 180 easy enough to do with even the narrow trails around here. If you cant do that just go off the trail and make your own trail to turn around it or find a side hill ride up roll back down but in any case if your getting chased reverse or no reverse turning around really isnt a good idea.

lets be serious, will u have enough time after u take a wrong turn to put the quad into reverse and go bacwards and than abck into gear and forward..

or just pick the front of the quad up and toss it into direction and than go really fast forward...

450r wins in all catergories and is way faster than 400ex. by alot.

The TRX450R was designed to be a motocross/racing quad. It will still hold its own on trails, but the engine of the 450R does not like, I mean HATES to lug down and go slow, which is going to cause you to do a lot of annoying clutch work.

The TRX400EX is an all around awesome quad. It's great on trails, and it can still really open up and rip on the track. The 400EX is also much more forgiving, you can totally abuse the crap out of it and it will still run perfect.

Also replacement parts are much more expensive for the 450R. Parts that are $2 for the 400EX will run you $12 for the 450R, and with the 450R in maybe 4 years you might have to do an engine rebuild. And maintence wise, the 450R is liquid cooled which is great for cooling, but it's one more major thing for you to maintain, and generally the 450R needs a lot of maitence everywhere.

And you say you're getting into jumping, well I have a Recon also and I know how it feels when you land a jump...it pretty much sucks. What I'm getting at though is that the 400EX has phenominal suspension compared to the Recon, and jumps will be no problem for you!

The 450R is a revving quad so it's going to be faster in the higher RPM's where the 400EX has its speed in the lower RPM's.

And you mentioned that all your buddies have 400's except one that has a 450. Well, no 400 will ever compete with a 450, but if you get a nice pipe and filter on the 400EX you'll pretty much rape all the other 400's and have a much better chance with the 450.

I would say get the 400EX unless you are soley riding tracks and or deserts.

i ahve both sitting in my garage right now and i agree with what he is saying, as a matter of fact, at the beginning of the year, i was trying to sell the 450r to get my wife a new 400ex so i could have my old 400ex back for trail riding

the 450r is alot faster then the ex.....it revs alot higher and out performs the ex all around.....the 400ex is alot more reliable then the 450r and you can lugg it around....the 450r likes to be screamed you constantly have to keep the RPMS up....i love the 400ex because it really is a tank....it takes alot for it to stop running and it corners really well....and yes a pipe on a 400ex makes a huge difference and you will smoke the other 400's....your only luck at beating a 450 is boring the ex out with a pipe and more mods and just pray that the 450 stays stock because once the 450r gets opened up no 400ex will stand a chance.

I have both also, the 450r is a rocketship with wheels
the 400ex is one of the best built trail quads around, very light and nimble in the tight stuff.

only weakness of the 400 is its air cooled and not as fast as the 450r

only weakness of the 450r is it dont like to put and its a race quad wich equals more up keep.
