I just got a used 400ex on a trade. He told me it was about time for a oil change, I didnt think to ask him what to use.

I know it take right around 2 qts. but what do I need to run?

Honda GN4 20-50 will be better in the hot months. Maxum premium 20-50 is a good oil too. You can also run Rotella T 5-40 I've heard with no problems.

I don't blame you for asking this question but it is kind of like asking what is your favorite food. You will get many many different opinions.

I am currently running Silkolene synthetic. But, here is my opinion on the subject. Run a quality oil (brand really doesn't matter that much as long as it is a quality oil) and change it frequently. Good oil and frequent changes will yield good results. Also, keep the air filter clean. If you are sucking dirt into your motor it really doesn't matter how good the oil is.
