Help!!! What Is This

took the clutch cover off the wifes 400ex to change the timing chaion and this was laying in the bottom, what is it for and how do i put it back

That's the clutch lifter arm return spring (clutch lifter arm = the thing sticking out of the case cover that the clutch cable attaches to--it activates the clutch). The spring fits onto the very end of the lifter arm shaft. Right next to where the shaft bottoms out onto a raised portion inside the case cover you'll see a little slot in the case cover. One of the spring's little "arms" fits into that slot keeping the spring's end from twisting. Kinda hard to describe but you should be able to figure it out.
