I have a 2003 Honda 400ex and I bought it for $1000 and it needed a head gasket. Well it ended up needing way more than that. I have replaced the jug, head, valves, piston, timing chain, and it still won't crank, I checked the spark and it looked a little weak. It will turn over and act like its goin to crank and then like backfire. Im waiting on the amr monster racing coil to get here. does any of ya'll have any ideas of what it might be? I need help bad!

make sure the cam timing is spot on. If your getting a weak spark then it could be a coil or it could have a bad plug wire

What are your definitions of 'crank' and 'turn over'? I consider them as the same.

I'm going to guess you your definition of 'crank' is 'to fire' or 'start'

With that said, the next question is: Are you using the stock cam or a cam that uses the decompression mechanism?

If so, is the decompression spring and plunger installed?

They look like this...

I hit the button to crank it and it will turnover and then like pop. I'm using the stock cam

i have seen this happen with a weak battery. the engine would turn over, but never start. we could pull the guy's bike off, then after it was warm, it would crank with the starter. we replaced his battery and he has no more problems.

So the battery could be the problem? It seems charged!

We put his battery on the charger numerous times with no progress. then we took the battery out of mine and put in his and it fired right up.

maybe you could borrow one just to see?
