04'Engine/trans Fried - Buy new or fix?

oil pump has shaving in it. Dealer says he can't find a factory defect. He's @ 1800 already & I have to add
HRC $300
clutch $-----
Gears in trans are hammered $---------

He's gonna call back - my guess is he's gonna be @ $2500 by the time he's done.

What to do
Have him put it in a box & give it back. Pay tear down fee. Go buy a new one from someone else.

Tell him to warranty it & I'll buy a new one from him.

Suggestion ? I'm sick & I wanta puek. All this is rider error? I had oil in it!

If I have them put it in a box my group could try & put it back on our own this winter or whenever I have the funds.

I had the same problem, rod locked up on crank. Cost me $385 in parts from servicehonda to get going again, and that inlcuded a new crank, bearings, and other misc parts that weren't even for the engine, and I spent $150 on a new piston that it didn't even need.

You've already spent too much IMO.

make some calls, we have had better luck with buying new then having them built BUT the right people can do it better for much less. and i presume you wish to ride it this summer...and if it gets built you wont be riding till next spring..ask around;) i sold my stock engine for $1500 so i know deals are out there!

Pappy the reason is because I have extended warranty - the dealer said he'd hook me up but now he's singin a different tune. So your saying bring it home & find a motor or get a new one? Hey I want to ride now & @ BPG on fathers day. Rich let me ride his on sunday (after the saturday nite race of course). I'm just checkin my options - next I'm gonna ask the wife:D

im with you on the warranty, but if he wont stand behind it, buy a new one from elsewhere. the only reason i push a new unit is i know you want to be riding not waiting!

2 weeks ago my crank bearing fried it broke the cases the whole 9 yards i took it to the dealer they tore it down and told me it would cost them over 2000 to fix it all that was good was cam and clutch and valve cover lol so i decied to buy a new motor off ebay hotcam and je piston 1400 shiped i asked the dealer how much to get my old motor back becuase i wanted my powdercoated covers but they wanted 500 so i told them to keep it imo buy new

Seriously if I was you.... go buy a Honda shop manual, and do it yourself... you have to learn sometime, and if you get stuck you know right where to go to find the answers.... www.atvriders.com just in case you forgot.

Thanx I know everyone is helpful here. I'll see what he tells me tomorrow & I'll think I'll try & see what he'll do for the one in the shop. if nothing I'll move on. I have 2 boys that would ride it if I fix it. With the shop manuel of course

spoke w/ dealer - $3000 - put my stuff in a box- I'm on my way to get it.

Best price I can find is $6700 OTD (tax included) for 07 450ER white- they want extra $500 for the blk w/ red frame

just got off the phone & I can get a black 07 one $6748 - 20 minutes from the house & I bought my kids from there but I didn't have any love in the service dept cause they couldn't hook up my kill switch on my 04 ride. I think I'm gonna go w/ them. I might be riding by this weekend YEAH!!!!!

Buy another brand 450. Im tired of fixing my 450r and the 08 is worse that the 06 and 07's. Honda needs to get with the program.

The latest is I went to pick up my quad. With some conversation I asked if the oil level was good - the reply was yes it was. My point is its not rider error & therfore it is a factory defect . Now I left it w/ them nows hes gonna have the rep look @ it & tell me to call 1 800 They are just taken the long way around - I'll get it. ASAP - Always say a Prayer

The 08 is worse? They just released info about them, so how do you know its worse?

there is a 05 engine on ebay right now, says 15 hours hrc cam, comes complete with all electrics, oil cooler and an aft market pipe and silencer. item number 180127572111. just thought i would let you know.

i had the ext warranty on mine and got no help from the dealer, lesson learned to that bs. anyway i thought i would mention it, best of luck with your rebuild/replacement.

Picked my 07 black w/ red frame up on saturday & rode on Sunday - I had them put the hrc kit in - it feels different then my 04. Man thats a rocket - used one tank now I gotta run thru one more. Then its off to Breezewood for fathers day - the 04 still at dealers:confused: - it can stay there until they do fix it under warranty - they'll get tired of it after it take up space.

Be careful with that because after its been there so long they can actually start charging you to keep it there, might want to read into the fine print. I know my dealer has a sign hanging on the wall behind the desk that says any vehicle left after X amount of days will be charged a storage fee of something ridiculous like $15 a day. Just a heads up.

Thanx - better fix my quad then - I called 1 800 honda & she said they'll check into it get back to me in a few days. That hrc kit - I can tell the difference. Nice!!!!! My heat shield fell off & is in the woods somewhere.:o . Just one more call & more gas to get the new one.
