wow... they sure did talk alot of crap about HOW LIGTH THIS THING IS!!! we saved 5 lbs here and 9 lbs here and 5 lbs here... the thing is only 5 lbs lighter then the other 450's... i kinda like the bike but that really dissapointed me on how much they tried to save weight and it was only 5 lbs difference

Yeah.... i feel the same... i thought i was going to be a little lighter too.

I'm not going to say anything. I hope when the mags do the big shootouts that they do a full wet weight comparison and see what the true weights are...

I would like to see the current line of 450's all hit the scales with all the fluids and a full tank of gas.

None of the 450's weigh 350lbs. Go out and weight them all. In STOCK form ready to ride the lightest one weighs in the mid 390's and the heaviest is like 405lbs. Can't recall which ones but have seen them all back to back on same scale.

The difference is that 345lbs might actually be the true weight. No quad I've seen yet has been under 375lbs dry on scales.

When manufacturers do their scales did you know that they don't even weigh the quads? They use a computer to manipulate a number due to the weights of all the components and use that. If you don't believe me then talk to reps about it. "DRY WEIGHT" is a computer's guess. Maybe Can-Am actually weighed their quad.

where did you see this side by side weight in ?

so every other make cheats the same way ?
Im going to the co-op and weigh my 450r
to see what realistic weight it is.

375 to 400 would be more realistic too me. these things are tanks. My 450R isnt 350 lbs.

Manufacturer dry weights are an absolute joke. They need to be done with oil, antifreeze, shock oil and the battery if it is E-start in the bike. Why even give dry weights, who drives their quad with no oil or antifreeze in it anyway?

I say weigh them ready to start with the same amount of gas in each one. Why is that so hard for the manufacturers or magazines to do for the consumer?

06-03-2007, 09:50 AM
they do it to make the machine look more apppealing....

polaris did this with their ute bikes when the measured the ground clearance...they did it at the foot pegs, not the rear axle like the others did...that way they could claim 11 or12 inches of g.c. compared to everyone else 5 or 6...

Yes, that should be a measurement the magazines do, though each bike may need a different amount of oil and the DS does carry 3 gallons of fuel where most others carry around 2.6.

Measure with all fluids and 2 gallons of fuel each to see what ready to race weight really is.

I wold like to see that too

just fill everything up, put the oil at full, fill the gas tank, trany, everything

and dont fill the tires with helium (sp)

I would like to see a ready to ride weight, you check the oil/trans fluids, lube the chain, fill the fuel tank before you ride so everything should be at the full mark.

if the mfg. want to claim a "dry weight" they can subtract the required fluids from the real weight, (but what good would it do then ?)

trx450r fuel tank is 3.2 gallons. If i had a way to get my 450r to work i would weigh it on one of the truck scales.

Nobody is taking into effect that the EFI components (throttle body, injectors, fuel pump, computer, sensors, return line, ect.) weigh 5-10lbs more than a carb. If you put EFI on the YFZ the way it sets now, the weight difference would be more like 15lbs instead of 5lbs. Look at the KFX, the Can-Am is almost 20lbs lighter.

yea well the DS doesnt have reverse, so it should be!

10lbs more than a carb?

I could put the TB, MAP, TPS, IAT, IACV, o2, a single injector, all off my integra on the scale and I bet it wouldnt weigh 5 lbs, let alone 10 lbs, and my tb is like 50 something mm, a bit bigger than on a ATV, my ecu is just about 5-10 lbs by itself, but its huge compared to the one that was on my bike, which also had to control more than what an atv's ecu needs to control.

and if you think about it you are losing the carb, which is heavier than the TB already, I cant see efi adding 10 lbs over carbeuration.

Hahaha, because that reverse gear is so heavy...
I have an old ATVSport mag where they weighed the wet weight of the yfz450, 450r, predator and ATK450. I'll find it and post up the results, I think most of you will be surprised... It makes it very obvious that the manufacturers lie about their dry weight, because 2.5 gallons of fuel, a quart and a half of oil and half gallon of coolant doesn't equal 40lbs... :o

They also show the front/rear ratio of weight. The ATK happened to have the most distributed weight front to back, interesting that the 7 year old quad is still more balanced than 2 of today's most popular 450's...

Even if the quad was only 5 pounds lighter stock to stock, it makes a huge difference where the weight is actually located. If most of the weight is centralized like they say, then the quad would seem much lighter and easier to handle. Time will only tell...

The yfz is a lot more than 350 pounds.

if they put the metal back into the frame there is the 5 pounds, or proboly a good amount of that. Weight really isnt anything of huge importance once you start to think realistically. Once you start putting aftermarket suspension components and everything out, your gonna equal everything out.

my yfz new with no fuel was 372lbs. added all the good stuff for mx and went to 374lbs w/o fuel

well, close, Im no genius so I dont know if fuel weighs the same as water but id assume its dang cloe if not same.

2.5 gallons of fuel - 20lbs
and radiator/lines/water pump/resorvoir, gotta hold more than half gallon- say 3/4-1 - 6-8 lbs
quart and half of oil - 4lbs maybe

so then theres 30 lbs, maybe they are also considering brake fluid, not much there, fluid in shocks which would be lame if they deduct that weight...

but its possible to throw in 40lbs of fluid. half or over half of that goes into most fuel tanks alone

gasoline is much lighter then water

CannondaleRider

Gasoline weighs about 6 pounds to the gallon, give or take.

Water is over 8 pounds.

Every quad is the best quad till it comes out. Just like the yfz450 in 2004 it was said to have in the upper 40's stock. :eek2:
