ive never had a rev limiter on an engine before so im not really sure what they feel like. on my 04 when i am tapped out in 4th and 5th gear the engine will cut out or kind of jump a little. im not really sure how to explain it. kinda feels like a belt when it slips a little. it dosnt do it on the track but down the road or in a feild it skips. wondering if thats normal

Sounds like the rev limiter to me. Could possibly be jetting issue though. If it does it at high RPM's then I would try a larger main jet.

i didnt really think it had anything to do with the jetting. it runs great. its just when im comletely wound out in 4th and 5th and not litting off.

easy to check, walk over to your quad, start it, and hold the throttle wide open. If your bike sounds like this when your "wound out" in 5th gear, its your rev limiter.

and if it doesnt?

I'd say jetting. When you hit a rev-limiter you know it. Its not like a belt slipping. Its cuts every-other spark. It will sound something like....DUDUDUDUDUDUDU...instead of BUUUUURRRRR like normal. Wide open you are pulling off the main jet. Put a bigger one in it.

right now ive got a 175 main jet in. the only work the engine has done to it is a high compression piston and hfm slip on. just wondering how much i should go up. 176,177 or 178?

My experience with the HMF is they don't like very much fuel.
Stock air filter with lid off = 160 main
after market/high flow air filter = 165 main
42 pilot
NCVQ needle clip pos #3 from top
air screw 1-1/2 turns out.

im not sure i need to mess that much with the carb. the thing runs great. awsome throttle response and idols good. its just in 4th and 5th gear as fast as i can go the engine feels like it jumps back a little. feels like a gear is slipping.

Notice the above post.He is running without an airbox lid and his main is between 160 and 165. Maybe you are to rich on top. You need to do a plug check
