I have a 04 450r, curtis sparks cam and needle, hmf exhaust, other than that stock,
Problem is it seems to be using oil, it has very little hours on it, maybe.... 40 or 50.
After about an hour of hard riding it uses as much as half a quart, it does not smoke or leak.

I wouldn't consider 40 or 50 hours very little. Probably could use a fresh set of rings or maybe some valve seals.

You must have not took care of the air filter cause I bought a new 04 450r and the only time I rebuilt it was for more power it never used a drop of oil, the 450's are capable of much more than 40 or 50 hours if took care of properly no matter how hard there rode, I got two 06's now one I practice on everyday and the other one is the woods race bike, the motors are orginal in both and the practice bikes been rode everyday for over a year it doesnt use a drop its never been tore down.

I take very good care of my bikes, clean filters and oil changes after every race, I had an 04 and raced it for 3 years (about 300 hours) with very little problems, and it did not use oil.
I got another 04 with about 20 hours on it, runs strong, does not smoke or leak, just wondering where the oil is going?

check the tranny oil see if its leakin in there, most of the time when theres a problem the 450s dumps the tranny oil into the motor tho, also check the breather at the top of the cam cover see if its blowing oil up there, its really rare a 450 uses oil.

So, am I checking for pressure or blowing, or just leakage into the head.... not really sure exactly what I am looking for, I really do appreciate any help. Z. #41

I was looking at some of the pictures from the ft. dodge race, maybe it is burning some oil. http://www.exriders.com/vbb/attachment.php?s=&postid=2865439

If thats his bike in the pic then it looks like it is smokin to me. Throw a fresh set of rings in it , or even a new piston. Why you have the head off just get some valves seals to. Then you will be as good as new.
