Ok guys i'm getting ready to buy something new for the upcoming harescramble season. I've thought about getting a new left over model 06er'. But i keep reading bad stuff about the electric start on them going bad, and engine failures and all kinds of **** so i don't know what to do. The only mods i would do to it is skid plates and maybe an hmf pipe, but i need something that is gonna be super reliable, cause it's gonna take nearly all of my extra money to pay for the darn thing every month and if the motor blows up out of warranty... i'm done. So help a poor guy out here and what do you recommend. I can get a 06 er for $4950, a Predator TLD edition for $4899, or a Z400 for $4900. what should i get??

06 450er is not going to be all that reliable. Though you can get it cheap so if you do get it plan on getting the kickstart installed which will run about $380 for parts if I remember correctly. That would still be my choice, though they have transmission problems too I guess.

tough call.

I would personally get an 04/05 450R or a kickstart 06/07.

i just bought a left over 06 for$4954 about a month ago and have had no trouble at all with the electric start i love my 450 the only thing i would complain about is not very easy to ride on slower tight trails other than that all i can say is wow what a bike

If you think thats bad, try riding an 04/05R or worse yet a YFZ.
A +8oz flywheel will greatly help with woods riding. You will have problems with the e-start, everyone does, so just be prepared for it.

Other than that they are a great bike.

My E-start is working just as good as the day i bought it, over a year ago.

the e-start on the 450r won't fail as long as you follow a simple starting procedure...
hit the throttle 5 times, turn on the key, pull the choke adn then hit the starter button with no throttle at all...

it will be a ***** to start once the bike is warm...that is my only complaint with the bike

I read all the time about people having issues with the 06er, I bought mine in Oct 05 and race the piss out of it no trans probs or starter probs, I do regular maint trans fluid and adj valves dont know if this helps the starter out or not but i have had a good ride for a year and a half.

I highly disagree!!! If you keep the oil changed and the other regular maintenance up on the quad then anything could be reliable! There is nothing unreliable about the 2006 as much as there is about your 2005, it just depends if you take care of it and keep the maintenance up on the quad.

I have had very good experiance with my 2006, just keep the oil and oil filter changed, and keep the air filter CLEAN. And check the valves 2-4 times a year! And other little stuff like that.

but the 2006 should be just fine! the way I start it is mash the gas twice. After that leave your hand off of the gas and have it in neutral and start it. Use the choke if needed. Just remember it starts best in neutral!
