I just dont understand how it can have any power and be fast is it one big gear or is it like an automatic car when that you can hear it shift and the rpms change especially when you nail the throttle ?

it is more like a snowmobile set-up
pulleys that seperate with a belt in between
oh, and they are frigging super fast

Think of it like a mountain bike. With the bike you can select the gears you want by moving the chain via cable to different sprockets. The transmission is doing the same thing with a belt instead of a chain, and two pulleys instead of gears. The rear pulley is a fixed diameter. The front pulley is angled to allow the belt to rise up to a higher diameter for a taller gear and back down to a lower diamter for a lower gear.

basically it is constantly changing "gearing" as it goes. kinda slips it up the range just like zsk said. most utilities use the same therory.

some cars even use these transmissions. that have thier fualts. and you have to get the clutching right to get the most power. but they can be very powerful.

The clutching is the key. In theory, a CVT equipped vehicle/atv will be quicker and faster than the same vehicle/atv because the constantly variable transmission (CVT) is always keeping the motor in its "sweet spot." The springs and weights are crucial to the CVT working correctly.

Stock against a 450 , the 450 will beat you . With a little work , exhaust , air filter , jets , tuning it will beat a stock 450 . Get into the clutches and you pick up more speed . Mine goes mid eighties with only a few mods . I know a guy that is hitting 100 with some radical mods .

Depends on distance, 450 will win races longer than 250'.

I have hit 83 with only minor work . Amazing what a exhaust and tuning will do .

I have MX raced mine against the 400/450's... Anytime I wanted the holeshot it was mine for the taking. The V simply launches when set up right. Where I had my battles was in the whoops...rear shock sucks...and any jumps right out of the corners. The V needs a little room to get all that mass moving. Because of the CVT, you don't get that hard throttle hit coming out of the corners to clear those doubles right out of the corners. If you pick your track wisely...the V can compete on the MX track with the best of them.

Well I saw one get outran by a completely stock kx 125. So they cant be that fast. It was on pavement too.

please, i saw a KFX get beat by a rascal (IE the motorized wheel chair)

No offense to those of you who prefer the KFX700 for its reliability and easy to use factor, its just some of "you" riders need to learn that it isnt fast. One good thing about it is loud with exhaust, sounds like a dualed out 4 banger......but i could be wrong , maybe the hillbillies in my area or at waynoka just cant ride it well

Get the hicks off the kfx700 and you will see what it can do . Stock they are not the fastest quad out there but with a new exhaust , tuning , rejetting , clutches and so on it is a screamer . I have been checked on radar on a police calibrated radar gun operated by a cop over 80 mph on my 700 .

At Glamis I raced 3 banshees , a trx450 stock and a raptor 700 stock at the same time from the vendors row on Gecko up to the campground . The banshees were way ahead once they hit second although I got the hole shot over all . The Raptor was just behind me and the Honda was a few spots back . I got off the throttle after pad 3 and that is when the Honda and the raptor got around me .

I also raced a raptor with serious mods and I was ahead until he pulled even in third gear and he pulled slightly ahead in fourth but I was not too far behind .

This from a quad that outweighs the other sport quads which leads me to believe you have some very unskilled riders in your area .

AS far as the beat by a 125 that is a load of crap or the rider is a complete puss on the quad . I ride with several guys on bikes and when it is flat or long straight lines they are eating my dust . Tight corners they catch up . I get by 125's , 250's and even most 450's . A magazine just did a test with the kfx450r vs the 450 bike and the quad stayed with the bike for the most part .

You are right, they are not that fast. All these people I have beaten can't ride or something was wrong with their quad.

BTW the kfx450r in these videos is also mine.

Sorry to say but the guys racing in these videos are accidents waiting to happen . That is not a ideal area for racing and is way too narrow . The guy of the 700 is totally out of control and I wouldn't want my quads anywhere near there . Weird how the videos changed after I made a comment about it , this was the original video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vLUl5u5OCU .

esquared... I'm with you on this one. These machines will run with the best of them when set up right. It may not be the best machine for any specific type of racing but it can do it all, and be very competitive...MX, Drags, Pulls, flat track...When is the last time you saw a 450 hooked up to a pull sled?

My V has beat tons of 450's and Banshees,Predators,Bikes, etc. If they are tuned right they are a Force to be reckoned with!

Only thing been able to hang with me is a CRF450. It just depended on who got the good start.
