Looks like a damn good project, with just a little TLC you could have that thing lookin new in no time. Good luck with it!

IM trading a specilized BMX bike for it.. kid doesnt ride it and i dont ride my bike anymore so its the perfect trade off..

I don't think that bike is a '96. The airbox and number plates are 93-94, also the '96 airbox would be dark grey. The swingarm decal looks like one from a '93, and the forks appear to be from a '94. There is a grey plastic "cage" on the end of the upper fork tubes on a '94, and I see them on this bike.

Yeah man, I wouldn't get this bike unless it was for dirt cheap/free.

The VIN is stamped onto the head tube behind the number plate. The 10th digit will be a letter that indicates the year.
L = 1990
M = 1991
N = 1992
P = 1993
R = 1994
S = 1995
T = 1996
V = 1997
W = 1998
The engine is serialized too. There's a number stamped onto a plate down by the shifter shaft. That can tell you what year the engine is (using a different system then above).

i was half kidding and half being a dick. it actually does make the crown too hot and will actually make your bike slower. and aftermarket pipes do not add power compared to similiar prices products like a boyesen rad valve, vforce 3 reeds, or porting. which are all cheaper than a sst and shorty.

i wouldnt worry about the pipe until you get the bike 100% able to ride safely. pipes do not add enough power to envest in one. these bikes were made to run fast out of the factory. a good set of reeds will help performance alot more than an exhaust. but if you absolutely have to get a pipe, get a stock, procircuit, or if you like fmf, get a fatty.
