Is there any repair manuals that are better than others out there, in other words which is the best?

I prefer the honda shop manual, but the clymer manual is good also the difference between the two is the clymer manual does alot more explaining and will help first timers understand better what the motor is doing and the reasoning behind the steps you take on the repairs. I like the shop manual because i use it primarily for specs and torque readings so it is just more basic and faster for me to use but like i said it doesnt explain things as well as the clymer but cuts right to the point. i hope this helps i would say the occasional mechanic should choose the clymer manual and the guys who know whats going on already should buy the shop manual.:D

thanks man, I just got my quad this year and over the winter I wanted to do some upgrade and maintenance, since I don't ride very gently...:devil

does Clymer actually have a 400 ex book, because I can't find one on the web?

Buy the manual from www.helminc.com They sell the official Honda shop manual. Its better than clymer.
