If you had the chance to score a 1980 XR500 for 500 bones, would you do it? It seems like its in really good shape, a few dents here and there but its straight.

do it if you want, does it smoke bad?? those older 4 strokes are sometimes nothing but problems, and it would be hard to sell later on

500 bucks is too much, how much would you try to talk him down too? I am looking for a starter enduro bike, eventually I wanna get a newer one.

1980 is starting to get really old. Drum brakes front and rear, damper rod forks, twin rear shocks, I think the front wheel was an odd size too.

A lot of the decision on a bike like that will center around what you plan on doing with it.

IMO older bikes like that are purchased more for nostalgic reasons rather than practical and performance reasons.

Like GPracer stated, it depends on what you want to do with it.

if you where a collector of bikes it would be okay but if you want to use it everyday i wouldnt buy it. it would be to hard to get parts for.

Its more or less to do some trail riding. Its something to learn on, I already plan on buying a 00+ XR but I want something to learn on before I get to bigger and better things. I won't be for performance its like 30 years old. Its not gunna be for asphalt or paved surfaces, just something to cruise to work and back. 10 miles of dirt road.

well then for 500 i would buy it but see how it runs.

Prolly fine for that.

For learning off-road riding techniques I wouldn't recommend a bike like that. You'll spend too much time fighting the bike and having it fight your confidence. You can learn on it--sure. But it will take longer and be a lot more frustrating then it would on something more modern.

my dad bought a 83 XR 500 2 years ago from the neighbor down the road for 800 bones CDN, the plastic was basicly pink due to sitting in the sun for most its life (open shed). the thing ran liek a top , that is if you could start it. after a little while i got better at.
for learnign on they are pretty easy to ride because you can start out in 3rd gear and it'll just chug along but they weigh somwhere around 330lbs i think so really you don't ride the bike, the bike rids you:eek:

for 500 got for it, what have you got to loose. if it runs good and seems tight you shouldn't have any trouble with it.

oh yeah my dad bought his for 800 Cdn and sold it in the fall for 1800cdn.
