Im going to be riding in the dunes next weekend and I was wondering if its necessary to have an outerwear over my air filter for the extra sandy conditions? thanks!

Necessary? No. But I'd recommend it for a K&N--especially if your airbox is open and/or you ride behind people a bunch.
I've never run an outerwears on a foam filter.

I wouldnt ride without an outerwear, I have seen people run panty hose over their filters also.
outerwares, while designed for a K&N, work quite well on a foam filter to keep the sand off. You just need to make sure you get a slightly larger one so it doesn't get oil on it from the filter and attract all the sand.
No it's not necasary but it really helps. Make sure your filter is oiled good so nothing gets through!
