im gonna be gettin me some money for graduation and I already got college taken care of. Hopefully I get 1000 or more. if I get around 1000-2000 what kind of quad should I get? I want more of a starter quad but something reliable and fast. What should I look for...blaster? 300ex? 250r?

400ex, easy to learn on, but you wont outgrow it like you might a blaster or a 300ex, plus there are so many parts available for them

id say a 400ex as well, tons of parts, fun, very reliable. I still love mine even though there are more high tech machines out now.

Reliable, fast and Blaster should not be used in the same sentence.

You can chrome a turd but in the end you still have a turd.

you obviously never rode a fast blaster. Id put my money out that a blaster can be modded to have more HP then a 400ex...any takers?? high HP blasters can make about the same HP as a mighly modded 450

Thats a fact for drag racing of corse but on track the blaster would be so far behind.

400ex's go for around $2000 on ebay. Some 450s go for $3000

05-16-2007, 12:17 PM
i don't think you can quite get that much hp out of a blaster, and have any remnants of reliability.

i would say go with a 400ex...i have had an atc 90, an atc 125m, a kawaski bayou 220, a honda 300ex and currently have a 400ex and 450r...of all those bikes, the 400ex is my favorite. it is almost a beginners bike. if you take it easy at first until you get comfortable on it, you should be ok...

05-16-2007, 12:34 PM
cant say all blasters are slow though...

Ive raced a few quick blasturds....none of them beat me...but they suprised me...

Id say get a 400ex, when you get ready for something faster, you can mod it or get a 450....but deffinately a 400ex to start with!:D

be a man, get a 450r  j/k def agree with 416exfreak. get the 400ex then a 450r :D

You got me on that one! No I have never rode a fast blaster. Their kinda like UFO's, I've heard about them but have yet to see one.

Well a 250r is not a starters bike.

300ex will suit you good.

lmao, thats some funny stuff

but im sure this guy isnt gonna wanna buy a bike and have to put a ton of money into it, i think a 400ex is still the way to go, or depending on your age and size, a 450 may not be too bad, but a 400 is so much fun for trail riding, and racing too, plus the maintenance shcedule of a 400 is alot easier to keep up with than a 450

I could care less what you suggest. And "keep quite son", I dont think so. You being a '86 model and me being a '72 model, I think you should be saying "yes sir DADDY"! Now STFU and go to your room.

Please explain.

05-18-2007, 04:51 PM
mod for mod- its cant be beaten. Ratio of stock hp to modded HP, the blaster will not be beaten by any quad in the line up today.

05-18-2007, 05:12 PM
700brad, whenever you get off a faster machine and downgrade alot of things feel slow...my banshee was pushing 75 hp for a while, then when i got on a 450 or even my 265r i was disapointed, you just get used to whatever your riding

05-18-2007, 05:43 PM
am i right??? just a couple of quick numbers to think about

stock blaster makes about 17 or 18 HP, we will round up to 20

stock 450 makes about 38 or so, again for easy numbers we will round up to 40

blaster is capable of making 60+ hp, even just out of a 240, witch they do have 295 kits and i think 275 kits for them but we wont get into those just yet... 60-20 is a 40 hp gain, for every 1 stock pony, they added 2....2:1 ratio

Vs

more expensive 450, a 450 makes 40 hp stock, at a 2:1 ratio they would need to make 120 hp to be even with the blaster...not gonna happen. They cannot even go 1:1 ratio and make 80 hp. the highest hp i seen out of a 450 is eh, 65 or so...about a 25 hp increase. witch is about 1: .6 ratio...

Blaster IS one of the best quad as far as potential HP.

That is not even considering cost of the quad and cost mod for mod...blasters for the money are one of the best ATVs you can buy with good potential HP numbers. :D

hmm, i seem to have missed something there, the 450 is still higher

05-18-2007, 06:51 PM
yup but looking at the increase, the blaster is way ahead, and that is just looking at a 240 blaster, i am not sure what kind of numbers the 270 and 295 blasters are putting out. Not to mention the weight difference between the 2, power to weight ratio the blaster has it beat AGAIN.

blaster wins in HP increase
bang for the buck
power to weight ratio
and relieability would be close between the 2. i would say the blaster would be more relieable because we all know how unrelieable the 450s are when you get a lil bit of power out of them.

the only reason i am even bothering posting up all this is because it gets old when everyone says blasters are slow, and pathedic when in reality they can be one f the best quads to own

i was just jokin around, you know what they say, "its not what you ride, its that you ride" thats whats important

05-18-2007, 07:24 PM
i couldnt agree more, but i think everyone should respect other peoples rides also. thats why i am defending the blaster owners

Why are we talking about 60hp Blasters? The guy said he might have 2K to spend. And he didn't say anything about wanting a drag-race oriented ATV. Almost any engine can be forced into making huge HP numbers. I'm not sure that's really what this thread should be about. JMO

The issue I have with Blasters is they are not really full sized quads. This handicaps them in the chassis/handling department. Sure, you can throw money at it until it IS a full sized chassis with decent suspension. But again--I'm not really sure we should be talking about upper-end potential of any of these machines.

If I've got 2K to spend and my choice is either a nice Blaster or a well-used (but still sound) 400EX, I'll take the 400EX. Again, JMO.

the thread just kinda changed topics, happens often ;)

just trying to make a point thats all...

if i had 2K and i was getting my first quad i would get a 300ex or a blaster for around 1200-1500, still have cash left over if something broke, and in a year or 2 you can sell it and still get all that money back, or atleast most of it

I think that sounds like a pretty good plan too. :)

thanks for the info guys!! it might be hard to find a nice 400ex but ill look around. Idc if I get a blaster but im 6'0 and maby growing so it will be my second choice if I cant find anything else. I see some really nice ones out there and some modded kinda heavy for my price range. Ill look into everything and do some comparing.

05-18-2007, 08:44 PM
another good choice would be a warrior, just a solid quad, has reverse and electric start (i dont know how important that is to you) but just another type of quad you can put countless hours on and sell it for maybe 100 bucks less then you bought it for
