I just got the PEP. I have a couple of friends that all have the PEP, the only problem that any of them have had is the one kid tagged a tree the other day and bent his tie rod, but it also snapped the stabalizer right at the threads on it.

WER, Scotts, and GPR are generally considered "the best".

If you want a cheaper damper (all the above will cost over $300), I'd recommend the Denton rebuildable (bare aluminum body), Speed racing, Muscle, Graydon, etc - they're all the same damper.

The other telescopic style dampers (like the Denton) have some inherent problems - the older black Denton's had poor mount geometry and caused different damping left to right. PEPs run too close to the exhaust on a 400EX and have trouble blowing.

As far as WER vs Scotts vs GPR - I think the Scotts is the best damper made, however, on a Honda, I'd go with the WER, because I don't like the Scotts & GPR mount setup.

On a Cannondale, the Scotts RULES - if GPR offers the same mount setup, they'd be fine as well - althought the Scotts offers more adjustment.

GPR seems to have the best "warranty".

I am gonna get the Denton Rebuildable. I think an awesome setup would be a Houser Stem, Wrist Rester, and a Denton Stabilizer.

I have the PEP and am very happy with it!! and I believe it only has 3 settings.

pep has three setings and you have to take it apart to change the settings. the denton has 7 adjustments by just turning a nob. i would personally get the denton rebuilable. i have the pep rebuildable only because i traded for it. Im taking off the denton non rebuildable thats on my 400ex for the pep. Im gonna test um both. I am worried that i wont like the pep adjustments and not bother to adjust it. If money isn't the issue its all about the scotts and ones like it. To adjust on the fly would be sick!

I've got a Denton, but its not the rebuildable one. I like being able to adjust the dampening effect. 7 different clicks.

As for the PEP, I never had to take the dampner apart to adjust it.

Derek,

The dampener really helps in the woods. It keeps the bars from jerking left and right when you run over rocks, ruts, roots and trees. Both Denton's have an adjustment on the end to allow the bars to move easier or harder... think of it as faster or slower. Basically, its a tiny shock absorber for your steering. Once you have one, you'll wonder how you got along without it! And if you ride with it on the firmest or slowest all the time, you'll look like this----> :macho

I love my PEP, I had a denton on my Banshee and this PEP is better IMO.

10-21-2002, 08:55 PM
why u say ur PEP is better?

BrianWrightR6
10-21-2002, 09:13 PM
It just feels better; also the design of the Denton on my banshee is poor. The way it mounted to the steering stem was awful, seemed like you could never keep it tight.

kicken250x
10-22-2002, 05:53 AM
your the first person that i have ever heard sa that the denton sux. most people so the exact opposite. with the denton just put locktight on the bolts as ur good to go. or did u try that? i dont ever remember hearing some1 say the PEP is better then the denton.....***scratches head***:huh

Got my Denton ordered today.

The Ohlins on the Moto is FANTABULOUS!!! It has high and low speed settings, and I can't believe how well it can be tuned to a riders liking; however, I imagine that it is expensive.

86atc250r
10-22-2002, 10:01 PM
Yes, the "Ohlins" on the Cannondale's is great. It's really a Scotts damper with Ohilns labeling....

Yes, they are expensive - but not much more so than any of the other top of the line dampers like WER or GPR.

Unforutnately, the mounting setup for the Scotts/"Ohlins" for a 400EX sucks. Great for adjusting on the fly, but poor for performance and it locks you into certain handlebars and stock steering stem. It's also exposed in the event of a crash or for knocking your teeth out. Could also cost you a race if you bent the steering stem in a mild crash where you could have rode on with a different damper setup.

What I'd like to see is Scotts offer a Cannondale-like mount setup for the 400EX. I'm considering building one myself and replacing my WER on my race quad.

Gabe,

I've actually been emailing back and forth with Scott at Scotts about their mounting design. My biggest gripe with it is that it won't fit on a 400EX with the IMS extended tank - which just about everyone who races GNCC's or Hare Scrambles uses. I told him that the mounting position alone was probably costing him significant marketshare in the ATV market. He told me that he was going to try and make the time to come up with an alternate mounting position. It might be worthwhile for you to send an email along to them encouraging the same thing...

Also, I've been running a WER damper now for a couple of months and I just don't feel like its doing much for me. There just barely seems to be any damping force with it. I have it cranked all the way down and have even swapped out the fluid with 10 wt. oil and it still seems too soft. Am I missing something? Also, does the Scotts on your Cannondale give you more damping force?

Dennis

Yes, the Scotts on the Cannondale works great.

I'm with you on the WER. I just don't feel like it's doing what it should, especially for it's cost. Mine also took on an air bubble with only a few races under it's belt.

I'm going to give it one more chance. I just changed the oil to 15w40 - it's got much greater damping force now, still don't know if it will be progressive enough though. Seems to have too much low speed damping and not enough mid/high speed damping..

From the box it should have come with 20w, so the 10w you added, should have lightened it up (if they filled it with the correct oil initially).

Another nice thing about the Scotts is it has a high speed damping adjustment (which I haven't played with). It's also got "sweep" adjustments so it could be swapped onto a bike if you're into that sort of thing or ever decide to sell it.

I think it would be pretty easy to mount the Scotts just like the WER. I may shoot them an e-mail about it. Losing the ability to "adjust on the fly" is well worth the flexibility it gives you not having it mounted on the bars.

Great replys... Now, after a rough race, I need to make a decision!

I remember last year this time... Elka was thinking of making a steering dampner... I can not wait any longer... My arms are like Jello!!!:grr

Yep I just got to ride on my Denton for the first time last weekend and it was a great investment. I couldn`t imagine riding a quad without one now.
