Logan #34's Dad

Hey Guys, Took Logan to his first national event this past weekend in Red Bud. He did okay but he really was uncomfortable with the ruts left from the other quads. He was noticably slower through the turns - entering and exiting. He is not afraid to jump at all but I can tell he is not comfortable with the quad bouncing around. He is spoiled from one local Ohio track that gets packed down and is somewhat smooth. SO - what can I do to get him to believe it will be okay and what "drills" have you done with your racers to work on overall corner speed? I may look for some flat tracks to get him to learn throttle control as the quad is side ways. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks in advance, Rocky - Ohio

A little advice that was given to me by the Tittle's and has worked well: setup 2 or 3 cones and just do some barrel racing type practice. Start out with a couple spaced apart and do a time check that way you have a base time to go off of. Then you can work on technique and speed with leaning and braking, showing them where they should start braking and go in and where they should be coming out at to maintain the most speed. It's a simple exercise but very effective, now the hard part is simulating a rutted out corner which unless you just make one yourself is obviously hard to duplicate.

I agree that cones and barrel racing does work very well. I had them to slide up to the cones and do a do-nut around the cones before running to the next cone. I had the best luck helping my boys by racing with them. Me and one of my friends take our kids to a local practice track that is very rough and washed out and run with them on the track. I have them to follow me through the corners, woops and jumps to show them the best lines and also pressure them a little. They seem to run alot harder with alot less fear when they race with Dad and nothing makes them happier then when they think they can run with a croud of 450's. Besides I sure do feel alot more comfortable being on the track with them when they practice that hard and your looking at the bottom of their ATV over the jumps. Not all Dads may have access to atv's but even if you could find some older kids that are willing to practice with them, it will help them alot. Just beware, we may have the heart to race with these little guys but most of us like me don't have the body to do the laps they do anymore!!!!!!!!!!

Try different tracks so he will have to adapt to different terrians, possibly a grand prix or too. Make a corner in a freshly plowed field.

I wish we had a field, we live in the hood the yard has to do. LOL Kyle watches a lot of Nascar and understands that in any kind of racing, the race is won in the corners, the deeper you drive it in and the sooner you can get back on it will win you the race. As far as the ruts and the breakers go the best way is to go faster over them, you just have to keep telling them that but until they do it that first time and they say hey that wasn’t that bad. Kyle always complained about them until this year when he moved up with the 90's and knew he had to run with the big dogs. And I think he's learned more from his older tracks buddies than me, they've been there. Like at Steel City two weeks ago he was doing the down hill left hander before the big hill better the second moto and he won, I told him man you were doing good in that corner and he told me Aaron #6 13-15 production told him to lean more and get on it sooner. And it worked.

I thought every mini quad dads yard looked like this LOL

all those are things we are using and they will help. we have a small oval track with jumps in the strieghts and i stopped grooming the track and make him practice in the rutts. we run a 50 and 70cc and we practice on the 70 and a 90 and this really seems to make him faster.

We do diffrent types of racing. We started with flat track and the kids got that quickly. Go fast lean and turn left. when we went to MX they were fast on the straights and corners then we work on their jumping. It takes allot of practice but the best practice is when they are at the track with friends that can push each other under fun conditions. They seam to learn the best. Due to they are having fun.

i agree about the friends and fun conditions i think some people loose sight about the fun factor in racing and riding and let the desire to win take over, i say we get some fl riders together and spend a weekend doing just that . just my 2 cent worth:D

Dude, I get that reply from my wife quite often too, whether he's wearing a helmet or not.
