This is actually pretty simple. I used hockey tape and wrapped the threads 2 times then reinstalled the cap. It has stayed put for 5 years now and can still be unscrewed and put back on easily.

A 2-1/2 or 3 inch section cut out of a bicycle inner tube and then slipped over the cap and main part of the tool kit tube works pretty good, too.

i never once taped or put the cap on by any other means than twisting it. It came off last weekend and is lost after 7 years with the bike

use a gasket that fits over or in the cap and it will stay put

I use Electrical tape along the tool kit housing where the cap slides over. Then I take an X-acto knife and clean up the edges and grooves.
Took 2 wraps around it (not stretched) and created the perfect amount of friction to keep it put, yet it's easy enough to get the cap off when needed since it doesn't interfere with the grooves.

You can do the same thing with the inside of the cap as well, just trim the excess off the rim of the cap.

Blends in too!

tear off a long piece of electrical tape. take cap off. put left over roll of tape inside tool holder. put cap on. now take the long piece of torn off tape and wrap around the cap to seal it water tight and wont fall off. when you need to get in the tool holder take the tape off and when finished replace with the roll you store in there. it's so simple even a monkey can do it.

I took the tool holder off, put it in my vise with a small amount of pressure at the opening. I then heated it with a soldering torch and let it bend slightly.

I no longer have trouble with the lid trying to come off, works perfectly.

I think I'll try thr inner tube idea.
I just bought my bike a few weeks ago, and have only had it out one time. when I bought it the tool kit cap was missing already.

I went to Honda dealer and bought a new cap.....

$12 bucks ??? are you kidding me ???

yep I'll be trying the inner tube idea before the next ride.

We always put the cap on and drill a hole thru the cap and the tool box and then put a spring clip on them.

The straight part of the clip goes thru the hole in the cap into the tool box and the curly part of the clip rides on the outside of the lid.
The proper size clip is the key.

I just bought a 2007 400ex that didn't have a tool kit at all. I made one yesterday using 2" black PVC, a cap and a drain plug. I bolted it on with some homemade brackets fabbed up from a strip of metal sold at Lowes. Total cost was $12 and about 20 minutes.

My first "mod" to my new quad.

I made a new bracket out of aluminum to mount it more upright and I also used a piece of electrical tape around the threads to tight them up.

Can you even get into that toolbox with that angle? It looks like the fender is totally blocking the lid. I would prefer to be able to get things out of the box easily instead of it being a deep dark hole that you can't reach into.

I think i'll just do the electrical tape deal.

It is only slightly blocked by the rear fender, it only takes a second to unlatch the seat and you dont even need to remove the seat assembly from the bike and then you can remove the lid to the tool kit. At least I dont have to worry about losing it on the trail. Seams like everyone I know has lost there due to the poor factory design.
I made a new tool kit holder to go behind the front bumper with 4" PVC, I will try to post some pics tomorrow.

what about getting 2 small eye screws 1 attaching that to the canister itself and 1 to the lid , then get a small peice of chain enough to reach from both hooks and enough slack to open and close the lid ? i did this and tell you ... never again have i lost the cap !
