What does getting a swingarm bigger than stock do for the suspension? Just wanting to know the advantages to it.

Also why does laeger offer a stock sized swingarm? Why would you want to replace your stocker with a stock sized aftermarket swingarm?

Thanks, and excuse my noob questions, they are probably dumb questions.

a longer swingarm will make you stock rear shock really soft so you would need to revalve your shock or get an aftermarket one, but your front end wont come up as bad on hard launches.

the laeger swingarm is probably a lot stronger and lighter than the stock one and im pretty sure that most of the XC guys use stock size

Yes, it keeps the front end down by moving the motor more forward. I have a +4 on my Hybrid and I can still get the front end to come up quick...but it helps alot.

So how would I figure out which size swingarm to go with?

Ill basically be doing MX and TT plus flat track races.

NO XC

Oh and Ill be getting my shocks revalved and respringed by GT Thunder in about 2 weeks.

So Ill need a swingarm thatll work good with those.

stay with the stock swinger. the mx guys like the swinger to be 1.5 inches longer on a 05 but on your 07 maybe only .75

on the other hand tt guys like the swinger shorter then stock, so if your doing both then stock is the compromise.

I race tt with a stock swinger. Where are you going to be racing at in the central valley, I'm from atwater so I know of some good tracks.

no one mentioned anything about traction and handling. a longer swingarm will have worse handling and less traction but if you have a high powered machine in the dunes your gonna need a longer swingarm to keep the bike's front end down. A shorter swingarm will have better handling and traction which is great on the dirt.

I am running a -2" swingarm on my banshee

A aftermarket swing arm is stronger but heavier than the stock swing arm which is made from aluminum.

Things a longer swing arm do
* tippier in turns
*stops front from coming up as easy
*more stable at high speeds
* makes your shock need to be valved stiffer
*weighs more than stock.

A-arms that are moved 1 inch forward move weight to the back of the quad making it easier to wheelie. A 1 inch longer swing arm moves the weight to the front making the front stay better planted. If your not having problems with the front end coming up then their is no reason to really by one.

ok so getting a longer swing arm for mx and tt is a big no no then? Cause of all the turns.

exactly. if you drag race, dune with a high horsepower atv, or hill climb competitively then you might need one.

I needed one on my atc250r, to keep the front end down. I got a +1 legnth, it still claws to the sky. It was needed to make it rideable with the motor I put in. I have a stock legnth swinger on my 88 trx250r, I would like a shorter one. I might get a 89 legnth that is 1/2 shorter. A longer swinger puts more weight on the front end, a shorter one puts more on the rear. If you are gonna get a set of a-arms, a +1 forward set will help the wheelie problem too. Also most are far heavier than the stock ones too. I forgot to add, a longer swingarm makes for a larger turning radias, makes turns slower and slower. Good for riding with sometimes, however bad for xc, mx guys might like it.

I'm surprised that no-one has mentioned the fact that a shorter swingarm shortens the wheelbase and allows you to turn faster. There is a happy medium though and it sounds as though those numbers have been covered in the previous posts.

would a +1 swingarm HELP prevent roll over? or worsen it and why?

Worse. Think of a buss turning fast and then a truck turning fast. Bus is longer so its going to be more tippy.

Longer has no effect on side to side stability, the only change it would make regarding that it is that would not be able to turn as tight.

what you want to do is get an axle and a set of a-arms with shocks. It will make a huge difference. Then i will meet up with you at hollister and we can hunt some dirtbikes:D
